ARITHMETIC QUESTIONS
Which of the following expressions gives the largest sum?
Expression A: (1,954 + 784) + (566 + 72)
Expression B: (2,954 + 784) + (566 + 72)
Expression C: (784 + 3,544) + (72 + 566)
Question :
answer :
If you think logically, you can figure this out without doing any addition at all. All three expressions contain the numbers 72, 566, and 784 so those parts of each sum will be the same number. Then, compare the remaining numbers: 1,954, 2,954 and 3,544.
The largest number of the three is 3,544 so that means that Expression C will yield the largest sum. The order in which the numbers is added doesn’t change the sum. In other words, (566 + 72) is the same as (72 + 566). Expression A gives the answer 3,376, Expression B gives the answer 4,376 and Expression C gives the answer 4,966.
