Yves-Marie Stranger, the author, has spent years immersed in this environment. He founded an equestrian stable near the capital and organized horse treks through the northern highlands. Alongside this, he pursued a career in conference interpreting in what is often called the “capital of Africa,” giving him close access to both local and international political and business circles. The book features three in-depth interviews with individuals who possess a deep, firsthand understanding of the country. Rahel Shawl, a prominent architect, is behind many of the capital’s most iconic buildings. Beede Mekonnen, a respected businessman, was once imprisoned due to his lineage as the grandson of Haile Selassie. Éloi Ficquet, co-editor of Understanding Contemporary Ethiopia (Hurst), also brings his expertise as a former director of the French Centre for Ethiopian Studies.
