Description

The Knights of Emerald: This epic tale takes place in a forgotten world in a time of great unrest as Amecareth, the Dark Lord of the Insect People, attempts to take over the known universe. It is the story of Kira, the purple child, born of the rape of Queen Fan of Shola by the despicable Emperor, who will ultimately bring about his downfall, and of the brave Knights of Emerald entrusted with her safety.
Book 6 of the saga The Knights of Emerald, The Chronicles of Onyx: With the help of Kira, Wellan discovers the chronicles written by the renegade Knight Onyx, and discovers the fate that awaits his soldiers if the Dark Emperor decides to adopt the same military strategy that he used in the past. Distraught, Wellan tries to obtain from the Crystal Magician greater magical powers for himself and his men.
Asbeth launches a new attack on Enkidiev and the Knights of Emerald must rush once more to the aid of the inhabitants of the coast. During the rescue operation, Wellan finally has the opportunity to sort things out with the King of the Elves. It is also in the beautiful forests of the Elves that the gods present an invaluable gift to him.
Upon his return to the Castle of Emerald, Wellan is confronted with a diplomatic dispute. Will he have the savoir-faire required to solve this delicate problem ?
Wellan does not suspect that the enemy is much closer than he thinks …

M ORE P OWERS

W hen they returned from the Kingdom of Opal where they had stopped rat-like creatures from driving the country into famine, the Knights of Emerald rested up for a few days. Wellan made a point of discussing the mission with each of his soldiers and spent a lot of time with Kevin who felt responsible for the death of his Squire Curri in Zenor. Wellan patiently explained that Kevin wouldn’t have been able to save him, even if he had been there. The sorcerer’s attack had taken place too quickly. He knew that the loss of his Squire would leave a gaping wound in Kevin’s heart that only time would heal.
Wellan would have liked to comfort Swan, as well, since she, too, had fallen victim to Selace’s fangs and his malice, but his feisty warrior was on her way all alone to Zenor to bring back the man she loved. There seemed to be a new wind of passion blowing through the Order since Ariane, the lovely Elf, had decided to spend a few days in Opal to get to know Kardey, the captain of King Nathan’s army, better.
Once he was sure that the Knights had recovered from their last mission, Wellan holed up in the library of the Castle of Emerald, as he did after every battle. He went over every detail of their expedition to Reptile Island, including the fact that Abnar had stepped in at just the right moment to transform Kira into a reptile goddess. Without her, all of their heads would be gracing pikestaffs in the village of Kasserr, the reptile leader.
And then the image of the shark diving across the ship’s deck started to haunt him again. None of the Knights on board had been able to stop it. They hadn’t even felt the attack coming. Worse, when they had given chase to the sorcerer, their fishing boat had gone so slowly that it could have cost Kira her life. Wellan and Jasson had finally been able to catch up to her on the rocky mountain in the middle of the abandoned island. Wellan could still not explain how Selace had died. In his mind he saw the silvery body exploding once again. But there had been no magic ray. A fault in the surface of the volcano might explain how flames or deadly gases could escape into the air, but not how they could blow someone to pieces. What on earth had happened ?
He also remembered how the goddess of Ruby had become involved and had driven their ship towards Zenor. Why hadn’t Abnar done the same thing on the voyage to the island ? The more Wellan mulled over the events of the previous two weeks, the more he came to the conclusion that the Knights of Emerald just didn’t have enough powers to face their enemies.
He jumped up off his chair and left the library. He needed to get to the bottom of this, so he left the palace. Once outside in the rain, he made himself breathe slowly because he wanted to keep his composure at all costs when he confronted the Wizard of Crystal. In his tower, set apart from the other castle buildings, Wellan found the Immortal with his arms crossed, as if he were expecting his visit. The Knight stopped in front of him. He bowed with a slight nod of his head, intent on staying on good terms.
“ I can still feel the poisonous influence of Onyx in your heart, ” said Abnar, beating him to the punch.
“ Well then, since you can read me so easily, I don’t need to tell you that we had to fight a new sorcerer without you. ”
“ I can’t be everywhere at the same time, Sir Wellan. ”
“ That’s precisely why you need to grant us more magical powers. ”
“ I don’t see why. ”
“ What ! ” shouted Wellan, his face going suddenly red.
Upstairs, Lassa heard Wellan’s outburst. He left his wooden and ceramic toys lined up on his bed and went over to the stairs where he could eavesdrop on the conversation. He recognized Wellan’s voice. Why’s he so angry ? Lassa wondered. For a five-year-old, the boy understood a lot of things, but he didn’t always understand adults or Abnar, his protector, either, for that matter. He took a chance and looked downstairs.
“ You gave me your word ! ” yelled Wellan as he paced back and forth in the round room in front of Abnar. “ When I asked you to give us more powers, you refused, telling me that you’d be right there, by our side to help us out, but you disappeared without a trace ! ”
“ Lassa was in danger, ” replied Abnar staying very calm.
“ But you didn’t even come back once you had moved him to a safe place ! We were attacked by a sorcerer who was even more evil than Asbeth ! It was Queen Fan who told us that the Kingdom of Opal was being invaded, and the goddess of Ruby who sped our ship towards the continent and it was my son who made it possible for us to reach Opal in time to stop the rats from destroying all the inhabitants ! ”
He has a son ! thought Lassa happily. And he imagined how much fun it would be if he were somewhere in the castle and if he were old enough so that they could play together.
“ The gods have first and foremost entrusted me with the safekeeping of the light-bearer, ” replied the Immortal.
“ Well, if you prefer staying here with Lassa, make us powerful enough to get along without you ! ” demanded Wellan stopping abruptly right in front of Abnar. “ We have an enormous territory to protect ! At least give the Knights the ability to get quickly from one kingdom to another like we did a few weeks ago thanks to Dylan ! ”
Abnar said nothing, but he was very annoyed. He couldn’t punish Wellan for his impertinence because Wellan was not an ordinary mortal. Theandras herself protected him and the master wizard Fan of Shola had feelings for him. So he couldn’t just brush him off and put a stop to his never-ending demands. The Knights of Emerald were no longer the fabulous army of days gone by. There were fewer of them, but they were braver and more honest than their predecessors. How would they react if he gave them greater powers ? His experience with humans led him to believe that they were never satisfied and that they would kill each other to get hold of more power.
“ I’ll grant you the power to move your army around in space. But I’ll grant it to you alone, ” he decided after a moment.
“ And what if something happens to me ? ” protested Wellan.
That’s impossible ! thought Lassa who was still spying on them. When he played with his toy soldiers, the one that looked like Wellan always defeated its enemies ! It scared away all of the wooden monsters and it was the one that had the greatest magic powers !
