Joachim Schöpfel Chérifa Boukacem Zeghmouri Conference report Usage assessment the French touch International Symposium: Academic Online Resources: Assessment and Usage Lille France November In the heart of Europe at only hour mins from St Pancras hour from Paris and mins from Brussels Lille hosted the first international conference on digital usage assessment in France LIS professionals and scientists from five continents met for two days on the scientific campus of the Lille University and discussed usage related approaches to academic digital libraries Usage assessment in France Since French information experts and academic librarians developed an intensive research activity to understand and accompany the uptake and usage of scientific digital resources Most of the research is linked to the academic big deals from the COUPERIN consortium and to the CNRS scientific information portals The scientific information centre INIST made available on its website a French version of the COUNTER Code of Practice and created a service on usage statistics The National Research Agency ANR funded a year research project EPEF on usage of journals databases and ebooks by the French academic communities based on a unique partnership between international publishers academic libraries and experts from Lille Nancy and Paris Lille University supports a nationwide study on the development and usage of French open archives and hosted in the first French symposium on usage assessment The event is the message The first message of the Lille conference is unambiguous: usage assessment is a hot topic for the whole value chain of the scientific information market This market is fundamentally international and so is research on usage Half of the speakers sponsors and members of the program committee came from other countries than France The conference language was a muddle up of French and English but as all participants shared similar experiences with digital resources no problems of understanding occurred Scientists and ... icon

The morphology of built up landscapes in Wallonia Belgium a classification using fractal indices Abstract The spatial pattern of built up areas within a NUTS European region Wallonia in Belgium is analysed using fractal indices Methodologically this paper illustrates the usefulness of fractal indices in measuring built up morphologies and also shows that clustering techniques have to be adapted for the non Euclidean nature of the fractal measurements An expectation maximisation algorithm EM combined with a Bayesian information criterion BIC is used Empirically we show that fractal indices partition the region into sub areas that do not correspond to “natural landscapes” but result from the history of urbanisation Urban sprawl seems to affect most communes even the remotest villages: traditional compact ribbon etc villages are transformed into more complex and heterogeneous shapes These indices seem to be useful for characterising and understanding the built landscapes as well as for modelling and planning urban realities Keywords: fractal dimension built up geometry pattern analysis peri urbanisation Belgium icon

C est une peinture rupestre cachée dans un abri rocheux d Afrique du Sud notre gauche les assaillants qui s enfuient après leur forfait notre droite les victimes qui passé la panique des pre miers instants se sont ressaisies et poursuivent leurs agresseurs en brandissant lances et boucliers L affaire paraît élémentaire des chasseurs cueilleurs bushmen viennent de fondre sur un village d agri culteurs bantous et ont volé leurs vaches Mais voici qu à la fin du xixe siècle un deuxième vol est commis cette fois sur la peinture elle même Frédéric Christol missionnaire protestant français l un des premiers avoir posé son regard sur l oeuvre s emploie y prélever des blocs avec des figures de vaches pour les envoyer des musées européens et attester ainsi de la présence d un art pariétal l autre bout du monde Depuis sa découverte il y a un siècle et demi cette fameuse peinture de Christol Cave a fasciné experts en art rupestre ethnologues et préhistoriens Tous y ont lu un témoignage si accablant contre les Bushmen les derniers chasseurs cueilleurs de cette partie du monde que l image en est venue icon
