Introduction

Instant Activity Kits Classroom Suiteincludes 30 instant-activity kits. Each kit includes an Activity ready for students to use, a Template ready for teachers to create additional similar activities quickly, and a PDF file of this tutorial.

Linear Presentation The Linear Presentation instant-activity kit includes the Present Classroom Suite activity, the Linear Presentation Template, and a PDF file of this tutorial. You can find these components by opening the Productivity Templates folder and then the Presentations folder in the New area ofClassroom Suite. The Linear Presentation Template enables you to make a large variety of presentations. In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Present Classroom Suite activity. Later in the tutorial, you will learn to create customized book report activities, using the Linear Presentation Template.

Universal Design The activities you create using the Linear Presentation Template andClassroom Suiteare designed for all students, including those with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Create a Folder for Your New Activities When you use this template, you will be creating new activities for your students to use. To organize these activities, you will want to create your own folder in the Activities area ofClassroom Suite. 1. At the Navigation Page, click the Activities button. Click the New Folder button on the right side of the screen. A dialog box will ask you to name the folder. Give it the name of one of your classes (e.g., Mrs. Smith’s Class).

2. Open the Linear Presentation Template (see page 3). 3. When you complete your work with the template and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As Activity dialog appears. Name your new activity, select the folder in which you want to place your work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be available for you to assign to students.

Part 1: Exploring the Present Classroom Suite Activity

Present Classroom Suite is a sample of the way you and your students can useClassroom Suitefor a variety of electronic presentations. This presentation combines photos, graphics, sounds, animation, and video. While the specific subject matter for this sample is an introduction to the features ofClassroom Suite, it showcases techniques you can use for any presentation.

Opening Present Classroom Suite 1. Sign in toClassroom Suiteas a Teacher (see Getting Started in theClassroom Suitebinder). The Navigation Screen displays. 2. Click the New button, if it is not already selected. Open the Productivity Templates folder. 3. Open the Presentations folder and choose Present Classroom Suite.

Exploring Present Classroom Suite 1. Present Classroom Suite opens with an IntelliMation on the page. No toolbars are visible, ensuring a clear focus on the presentation itself. 2. Use the blue arrow button to view the first three pages of the activity: the title page, the introduction page, and the menu page with four buttons. 3. Each button on the menu page leads to its own three-page section. These individual sections pro- vide details about the features of a particular tool included in Classroom Suite. 4. Explore the techniques you see on each page. Consider how you might incorporate these techniques into your own presentations. 5. For example, pages include: IntelliMations pages 1, 2, 5, 10, 12, 13, 14 Buttons that open other documents page 4 Buttons that open Web sites page 15 Movies page 5 Sounds page 5 Answer Checking page 9 6. Close this activity without saving it. In the next part of this tutorial, you will use the Linear Presentation Template to create your own presentation.

Part 2: Using the Linear Presentation Template

The Linear Presentation Template is a good choice for a presentation where ideas flow in a straight line. As you create an example project, you will become familiar with the authoring tools inClassroom Suite.

If you want students to use this template, move it into the Activities folder, butdo not assign it to them as an assignment. Students doing assigned work do not have access to some authoring capabilities needed to use this template (creating IntelliMations).

Opening the Linear Presentation Template 1. From the Navigation Screen, click the New button. 2. Open the Productivity Templates folder. Open the Presentations folder and the Linear Presentation Template. 3. From the File menu, select Save. Save your activity asMultimedia Learning. It will be saved into your My Work folder. Editing Text 1. The Linear Presentation Template has a title page and 10 pages ready for your presentation. Toolbars are available at the top and sides of the page. On the title page, you will be editing the name of the presentation, the background, and the picture. 2. Select the text box. Highlight the text and change it to readMultimedia Learning. 3. Click the Text tool at the left of the page. New text editing buttons display at the left. Enlarge the text. 4. Use the Text pull down menu to make more changes in the text, such as font or color. 5. Hold down the Control key and simultaneously click the text box ([Ctrl]+click). 6. The Properties of Text Box dialog box displays. Click to place a check mark before Read-Only Text and Lock Position, so the title cannot be changed. 7. Repeat steps 2–6 for the bottom text box. 8. Use steps 2–6 to edit text on each of the other pages of your presentation.

Use[Ctrl]+clickeach time you want to lock the position of a text box, make text Read-Only, or use the other options available in the Properties of Text Box dialog box.

Part 2: Using the Linear Presentation Template

Adding Backgrounds You can change the background of your presentation. 1. Click the Backgrounds button at the top right of the page. A toolbar of available backgrounds displays at the bottom of the page. 2. Click any background to insert it on the page. 3. Click the Backgrounds button again to clear the toolbar from the page. Working with Pictures You can add pictures to any page of your presentation with graphics from theClassroom SuitePicture Librar y as well as from other locations: a clip art CD, a digital camera, or other art you have collected. 1. Select the picture on the title page (or any page). 2. Click the Clear button at the left to remove the picture.

Adding Presentation Art 1. Click the Presentation Art button at the top of the page. A toolbar of pictures displays at the bottom of the page. Click the black arrow at the far right twice to see more choices. 2. Locate the Computer and Kids picture. Click to add to the page. It will insert directly on the page.

Adding Pictures from the Picture Library 1. Click the Picture Librar y button. 2. The Picture Librar y toolbar displays at the bottom of the page. Use the Next arrow at the right to scroll to the Frame Animations categor y. 3. Click the Student (animated) picture to add to the page. It will insert directly on the page.

Adding Pictures from Other Locations 1. From the Edit pull down menu, choose Insert Picture from File. 2. Navigate to a location where the picture you want to use is stored. 3. Click Open to place the picture on the page. Follow the steps on page 5 of this tutorial to resize, layer, and lock the new graphics on the page.

Part 2: Using the Linear Presentation Activity

Resizing, Layering, and Locking Pictures You can resize, position, and lock pictures you add. You can also choose to have a picture display either under or on top of a text box. 1. Select the Computer and Kids picture you added to the page. Using the mouse, position it on the page. 2. Use the Make Smaller and Make Bigger buttons to change the size of the picture. 3.[Ctrl]+clickthe picture. The Properties of Picture dialog box displays. Click the Settings tab 4. In the Design Layer box, use the arrows to select 2to place the picture under the text boxes. Use the arrow to select+2to allow the picture to overlap text boxes. (Text boxes are at layer 0.) 5. Click to place a check mark before Lock Position. Click OK to close the dialog box. 6. Repeat steps 1–5 for each picture on each page. Adding and Removing Pages Ten pages may be more or less than you need for your presentation. You can add or remove pages without affecting the function of the activity. 1. Click the Advanced Mode button. 2. Click the Sort Pages button. The Sort Pages dialog box displays. 3. To add a page, select one of the uncustomized pages in the template. Click the Duplicate Page button. A new page is added. 4. To delete a page, select the page(s) you want to delete. Click the Delete Page button. The page will disappear. 5. Click OK to close the Sort Pages dialog box.

Finishing the Presentation 1. When you have finished creating all the pages of your presentation, click the Hide Toolbars button to simplify the screen. 2. From the File menu, select Save.

Congratulations! You have just created a presentation. In the next section of the tutorial, you will learn to add movies, buttons, and sound to your presentation.

Part 3: Customizing the Linear Presentation Activity

Adding Movies Classroom Suiteincludes almost 100 video clips, or you can add one of your own. You will find these video clips in the Media folder, if you chose to install them when you installed the program. Other wise, you can locate the Media folder on theClassroom SuiteCD. 1. Navigate to the My Work folder and open the activity you just saved, if you want to add movies to that presentation. 2. Click the Show Toolbars button. Use the Next Page arrow to move to page 2 of your presentation. 3. Click the Insert Movie button on the toolbar at the upper right side of the page. 4. The Open dialog box displays, open to the Movies folder withinClassroom Suite.

5. Open the Birds Movies folder and select Goose. 6. Click Open. 7. The unlocked movie will insert on the page. Position the movie, resizing it to fit in the television screen. 8.[Ctrl]+clickthe movie and check Lock Position. The movie will now play when you click on it.

Alternatively, use the Open dialog box in step 4 to navigate to a location on your computer where you have a movie file stored. Follow steps 6–8 to add your own movie to your presentation.

Playing Movies Movies that have been locked will play when you click on them. However, there are other ways to have movies play on the pages of your presentation.

Playing Movies When You Open Pages You may want the movie to play automatically when this page of the presentation displays. 1. Click the Advanced Mode button. Additional toolbars display. 2. Click the Page Properties button at the bottom of the toolbar at the right side of the page. The Page Properties dialog box displays. 3. Select the Page Actions tab. In the Actions list box at the left, locate and select the Play categor y.

4. In the list box at the right, select Play Movie. Click the Add: Play Movie button. The Play Movie action will be added to the list of page actions at the bottom of the page. 5. Click OK to close the dialog box. The movie will now play when you open this page of the presentation.

Playing Movies by Clicking Buttons on a Page You may want to activate a movie at a specific time, rather than when the page opens. You can create a button that you click to activate the movie. 1. With Advanced Mode still selected, click the Button tool at the right of the page. 2. Click and drag the mouse on the page to create a button. The Properties of Page Button dialog box displays. In the Name box, typePlay Movie. 3. Click the Actions tab. In the Actions list box at the left, locate and select the Play categor y. 4. In the list box at the right, select Play Movie. Click the Add: Play Movie button. The Play Movie action will be added to the list of page actions at the bottom of the page. 5. Click the Appearance tab. In the Button Style list box at the lower right, select Aqua Barrel.

6. Click OK to close the dialog box. 7. Resize and position the new button you have created. 8.[Ctrl]+clickthe button. In the Properties of Page Button dialog box, click Lock Position. This will activate the button. 9. Click OK to close the dialog box. 10. Now click your new button. The movie will play.

Part 3: Customizing the Linear Presentation Template

Adding Sound You may wish to add your own voice or other sounds to your presentation. Sound can play automatically when you turn the pages of the presentation, or sound can play when you click a button you have placed on the page. You will need a microphone for your computer. 1. Select any page where you want to add sound. Click the Add Sound button. Recording Sound a. Click the Record button. b. When the Record Sound dialog box appears, click the Record button. Record the sound. Importing Sound a. Click the Import button. b. The Sounds folder opens with a selection of four available sound clips. Or, you can click the Import button to navigate to other sound files you may have stored on your computer. 2. Click OK when you are finished recording the sound or importing the sound for a specific page. 3. From the Pages menu, select Page Properties. 4. Click the Page Actions tab. From the Page Actions list at the left, select the Play categor y. 5. From the list that displays at the right, select Play Sound. Click the Add: Play Sound button. The action Play Sound will be added to the Page Action list box in the lower section of the Page Properties dialog box. 6. Click OK to close the Page Properties dialog box. 7. Repeat steps 1–6 for any page of your presentation. 8. Follow steps 1–10 on page 7 if you want to create a button that will cause a sound to play. In step 4, instead of the Play Movie action, select the Play Sound action.

Part 3: Customizing the Linear Presentation Template

Creating an IntelliMation You can add a path animation, called an IntelliMation, to any page of your presentation. 1. Click the Next Page arrow to move to page 3 of your presentation. 2. Click the Bullets button at the top right of the page. A toolbar of graphics displays at the bottom of the page. 3. Click the red Notched Arrow. It displays on the page. Move it to the bottom left. 4. Click the red Create IntelliMation button at the top of the right toolbar. 5. The IntelliMation time line displays. You will use this time line as you create an animation sequence. 6. The toolbar of Transform tools at the left enables you to rotate, enlarge, or flip the object(s) you have chosen to animate (e.g., the arrow). 7. With the arrow selected, click one of the Transform tools. In this example, click Flip Horizontally to change the direction of the arrow. 8. Next, click the 1 second mark on the time line. Move the arrow half-way up the page toward the header. 9. Click the 2 second mark on the time line. Move the arrow up to the left of the header. Change the size, if you wish. 10. Continue to click new time points and move the arrow to the picture and then to the bullet points of text at the lower part of the page. If you want to add more time to your animation, from the IntelliPics Studio menu, select Next Five Seconds. Then continue your animation. 11. Click the arrow at the end of the time line to preview your animation. If you want to remove time line points or change your animation, click the Remove IntelliMation Time button at the right of the time line. It will remove the points one at a time. 12. When you are satisfied with your animation, click the Create IntelliMation button again to remove the time line.
