Statement regarding the events from 21/08
On Friday evening August 21st, a person who boarded in Brussels opened fire on board of Thalys train 9364 (Amsterdam-Paris) in a town called Oignies (Haute-Picardie). Three persons were hurt, before the gunman was overpowered by passengers, who happened to be American military personnel.
The train was then diverted to Arras, where the injured were transported to the hospital. All passengers were taken care for and got psychological assistance, if requested. Late in the evening, all passengers were transported to Paris, where they could choose for a room or taxi.
The inquiry is led by the French authorities. Meanwhile, the vigilance is increased. Thalys is working together with the competent authorities.
Thalys takes part in the sorrow regarding the traumatic incident and wishes, besides thanking the passengers who intervened, to express its support to the staff. In such crisis situations, it is the mission of the staff on board to stop the train to and to raise the alarm. Thalys supports the train manager who, at that traumatic point, managed to protect the passengers in his direct surroundings and to stop the train. Furthermore, he put himself at risk by alerting the passengers in the front part of the train. Thanks to his alertness, the police forces were able to arrive on site quickly and to take the necessary measures to redirect the train to Arras.
The second train manager was able to deal with the passengers after the perpetrator had been overpowered. Thalys wishes to thank the staff for the active mobilization. More than 50 volunteers at multiple places helped out and supported the passengers.
