A Healthy Summer for Berry Eating Brits
PR Newswire
LONDON, June 28, 2012
LONDON
,
June 28, 2012
/PRNewswire/ --
With thousands of strawberries famously served at the
Wimbledon
championships
[1]
each summer, the strawberry is a quintessentially British
choice. Indeed for 64% of Brits, the strawberry is their favourite summer berry,
as revealed in a recent survey by office fruit delivery company Fruitdrop.
Raspberries are
Britain's
second favourite summer berry, with 22% of us
preferring to snack on them this summer.
In order of preference,
Britain's
favourite summer berries are:
1) Strawberries (64%)
2) Raspberries (22%)
3) Blueberries (9%)
4) Blackcurrants (5%)
Interestingly, the Institute of Food Research has identified strawberries and
raspberries as one of the main dietary sources of cancer-fighting ellagic acid
[2]
.
So snacking on the government recommended portion size of seven
strawberries, or two handfuls of raspberries
[3]
each day throughout the
summer could be improving our health.
Ben Thompson, managing director of Fruitdrop comments: "With high levels of
vitamin C, strawberries can help to prevent health problems such as the
common cold
[4]
. As vitamin C cannot be stored in the body we should be eating
foods rich in this vitamin each day
[5]
, so it seems that Brits regularly snacking
on berries and other fruit and vegetables rich in vitamin C are in for a healthy
summer!"
Thompson continues: "A seasonal Fruitdrop box for office delivery contains
seasonal berries and soft fruits, as well as the core favourites such as bananas,
clementines, apples and pears. Seasonal fruit boxes are priced from just £24,
with enough fruit for up to 20 employees for a week; a cost effective way to
keep office workers healthy throughout the year".
