College Funding 2011/12 (England) – Guide for UNISON reps dealing with cuts
Introduction 
FE and Sixth Form Colleges in England have now received their final funding allocations for 2011/12. Over the next few weeks colleges will therefore be finalising budgets and some will be announcing job cuts and course closures. The cuts to college funding, whilst extremely serious and unprecedented, are nonetheless less severe than the government’s cuts to higher education and local government. We understand overall the ‘final’ funding allocations to colleges for 2011/12 are slightly better than originally feared. However, the funding situation will vary dramatically from college to college, with some colleges more affected by government’s cuts than others. UNISON’s top priority is to campaign against the Tory led government’s agenda of cuts and austerity, for more information go to http://www.unison.org.uk/million/ Whilst campaigning for political change we also need to ensure that some colleges don’t use the current climate as an excuse to make even deeper cuts. This briefing is meant to help UNISON reps work their way through the complex issues of college funding. We hope this information will help you challenge in your own college any threatened cuts to jobs, terms and conditions and courses. Briefing contents Section 1: How college funding work - This gives a basic overview of how colleges are funded Section 2: Summary of cuts to national college budgets - Sets out details of the government’s cuts to the national budgets that colleges rely on for the majority of their income Section 3: Model questions to ask locally -These questions will help reps find out if their own college is taking a funding cut in 2011/12. Section 4: Things to watch out for and oppose -Will help reps spot the standard argument put forward by some colleges wanting to make deeper cuts than their funding for 2011/12 justifies Section 5:  Alternatives to Job Cuts : Gives example of options for making savings and raising money other than simply cutting jobs and courses Alongside this briefing UNISON reps should seek support from their branch and region when dealing with cuts and redundancies
