Right back at you
Senior Ryan Murphy of Bristol Central High School returns a volley to Hall High
School last Tuesday. The Rams fell to the Warriors, 6-1.
BERLIN – When the
Bristol Central and Berlin
baseball teams battled on
Monday, April 25, the
momentum switched sides
so many times it didn’t seem
like either team would ever
take ultimate control of the
game.
But two Central errors
in the bottom of the sixth
stanza led to a couple
unearned runs to turn a tied
game into a 4-2 victory for
the Redcoats in a CCC South
contest from Sage Park in
Berlin.
And after the game,
Central coach Bunty Ray
summed up the game per-
fectly.
“We had it, we lost it.
We had it, we lost it. They
had it, they lost it. It was just
a wacky high school base-
ball game,” said Ray.
The game really boiled
down to the bottom of the
sixth inning in a tied ball-
game.
Berlin’s
Brendan
Germano reached second
base via a dropped ball in
center field while advancing
to third off a fly ball from
Mike Cowperthwaite.
With a man on third
and one out in the frame,
Bob Mozzicato popped up a
foul ball right in front of the
Central dugout.
Pitcher Tyler Cyr made
a magnificent diving catch
and somehow managed to
keep possession of the ball
for the second out.
Matt Papke followed up
with a walk and men were
on the corners.
From
there,
Zach
Zulkiewicz
drilled
a
grounder to Derek Cote at
short stop.
But the throw was low
and got by Eric Roman cov-
ering at first as Germano
scored to give Berlin a 3-2
push.
Papke ended up at third
as the ball rolled to the
fence on the first base side
and was called dead.
The Berlin runner at
third was allowed to reach
home as the Redcoats went
up 4-2.
Two big errors led to
those two runs but in the
scheme of things, a multi-
tude of minor miscues led
up to a very tough loss for
Central.
“The grass was playing
slow and (Zach Zulkiewicz)
put a swing on it, put it in
play and good things hap-
pen when you put the ball
in play,” said Ray. “We need
to be able to make plays but
that game came down to a
lot more than those two
plays. Those things are mag-
nified in close games but we
did some small mental
things throughout the game
that we work on, that you
need to do on the next level
to win.”
“Things that nobody
else would see that the
coaches and players know
about...that’s what I’m a lit-
tle more disappointed in
(which are) the things that
don’t show up to the naked
eye.”
Cyr (2-2) suffered the
loss but pitched a solid
game, racking up a game
high seven strikeouts and
giving up only three hits in a
complete game effort.
Out of the Redcoats’
three hits in the game, two
didn’t leave the infield, and
Germano’s double was the
only ball to reach the out-
field cleanly.
“I told him after the
game that he could be bet-
ter,” said Ray of Cyr. “I
expect more. He didn’t have
his great stuff today. He did-
n’t have his command. He
battled because that’s what
he always does... He’ll
always keep us in the game
but I thought he could be
better. That’s not a knock on
him, that’s just a challenge
to him.”
“He made some pitches
that were borderline that he
usually makes and gets outs
on but he’ll bounce back
because he’s a competitor, a
warrior...he’s our guy.”
In the first stanza,
Austin Barnes reached base
off an error while Germano
tallied an infield hit to put
two runners on base.
From
there,
Cowperthwaite drilled a hit
to shortstop and beat it out.
Barnes scored from
third to make it a 1-0 con-
test.
Central— with five hits
in the game— countered in
the first and put together a
two-out rally.
Jerry Albino started it
off with a single to center
and Roman walked.
With
two
on,
T.J.
Wyrebek smashed a shot to
center that looked good for
a base hit.

MIDDLETOWN
Saving its best for last, the
Bristol Eastern baseball
team opened the week of
April 25 with a resounding
victory at the expense of
Middletown.
And this past Monday,
it saw the Lancers making a
colossal comeback against
the Blue Dragons.
Trailing 4-3 going into
the final inning, Eastern
put up four runs in the top
of the seventh frame to
complete a come from
behind victory, a 7-5 tri-
umph, from Middletown
High School.
Eastern tallied nine
hits in the game, led by two
apiece
from
John
Pastyrnak, Steve Julius and
Steve DelCegno.
Pastyrnak scored three
runs while Tyler Bush col-
lected two RBI while
DelCegno, getting some big
hits as of late, had a double
and a triple.
Jake Greger picked up
the victory and is now 3-1
on the campaign. He
allowed six hits, four
earned runs and three
walks.
Greger collected nine
strikeouts in the game and
had his stuff working
against the Blue Dragons.
The game focused
around the seventh and
final frame when Eastern
retook command of the
game.
Trailing
4-3,
the
Lancers made its move in
the top of the seventh
frame starting with pinch
hitter Alec LaMar getting
hit by a pitch.
Pastyrnak plastered a
single to left center and
runners were on first and
second with no outs.
Zach Pelletier followed
suit with a sacrifice bunt
but ended up safe at first
when the ball was thrown
into the runner and the
bases were juiced.
Bush drilled a sacrifice
fly to tie the score and off a
double
to
right
by
DelCegno,
Pastyrnak
scored the go-ahead run as
Eastern grabbed a 5-4 lead.
Following
another
Middletown miscue that
led to another Eastern run,
Julius grounded out but
another runner crossed the
plate, which made it a 7-4
game.
Middletown had an
answer in the bottom of the
final frame and started the
rally with a lead off double
and a walk to put the tying
run at home plate.
With one out, Patrick
Smith came on to relieve
Greger but faced a little
adversity early.
Smith gave up a run off
a wild pitch and proceeded
to walk a batter.
But from there, Smith
composed himself and
posted a strikeout and one
final putout to secure the
victory for the Lancers.
After two scoreless
innings, Eastern struck first
in the third - via an
unearned run - to grab a 1-
0 push.
Meanwhile,
Greger
retired the first nine batters
before giving up two runs
in
the
fourth
as
Middletown led 2-1 after
four completed frames.
Greger yielded two sin-
gles, hit a batter and yield-
ed a two-run double as the
Blue Dragons led by one.
Bush drilled a two-out
single in the fifth to knot
the score at two-all but
Middletown struck right
back with two runs to surge
out in front 4-2.
