S’EXPOSE EN CHINE
French luxury celebrates China     Exhibition at Plaza 66, Shanghai Sponsors: Comité Colbert Shanghai Municipal Economic Commission The People’s Government of Jing An District, Shanghai Organiser: Plaza 66, Shanghai from 26th October to 7th November 2005   General Assembly, Beijing 27th October 2005
Exhibition at Plaza 66, Shanghai from 26th October to 7th November 2005.  Founded in 1954 by Jean-Jacques Guerlain, the Comité Colbert represents sixty-nine French companies from the luxury goods and design sectors, sharing the same concepts of excellence, beauty and refinement. The Comité Colbert’s goal is to introduce the prestigious French "art de vivre" (art of living) throughout the world.  From 26th October to 7th November 2005, the Comité Colbert is organising an exceptional exhibition in Shanghai, together with Plaza 66. This project has received the high patronage of Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic. The Shanghai Jing An Government and Shanghai Economic Commission have given this event strong support from the very beginning.  China, the most mysterious oriental country in French eyes, and France, the most romantic western country in Chinese minds, have been expanding their contacts in many fields. French luxury is no doubt one of the most important industries in France, with renowned names in nearly every luxury products sector, like silver and bronze, haute couture and fashion design, crystal, leather, publishing and decoration, faience and porcelain, hospitality and gastronomy, gold and jewellery, fragrances, etc..  French luxury embodies values which are gradually becoming more and more important to Chinese people, with their strong desire to improve their quality of life in line with China’s rapid economic development in recent years.  In 2003, the Comité Colbert celebrated the Year of China in France by tracing an itinerary across Paris, through one emblematic object from each of its member companies. These objects showed the inspiration that China has given to French designers over the years… This event was officially opened on the Place Vendôme on 1st October 2003, by the French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin and the Chinese Ambassador in France Zhao Jinjun.  In 2005, the Comité Colbert has decided to illustrate, in China, the creativity of French luxury and the values of each of its member companies with this exceptional exhibition in Shanghai. The Comité Colbert chose Shanghai because of its renown in Asia, its economical vitality and dynamism, its unique combination of eastern and western styles.
More than 50 Comité Colbert member companies are participating by exhibiting one emblematic object, specially designed and created according to the spirit of this exhibition; passion and creation, with the know-how (savoir-faire) of each company. Each of these objects tells a unique story in its own atmosphere. They will be presented through a scenography devised by Christian Ghion, one of the most famous French designers. This scenography includes the following eight themes:Excellence of know-how,Imagination and Dream,Places and Territories,Paris,Living romance,Precious and rare,Celebrating sensesandHeritage and history, which represent the spirit mentioned above.  Through this exceptional event, the Comité Colbert celebrates China by expressing the special link between China and France. This exhibition shows that the Comité Colbert places China in a very strategic position in the global luxury market.  It is hoped that Shanghai will be a showcase for French “art de vivre” in China, and this exhibition will become a symbolic event of the continuing exchange of culture between the two countries.
General Assembly in Beijing, 27th October 2005
After the inauguration of the exhibition in Shanghai, the Comité Colbert will gather in Beijing, to hold its General Assembly in a country outside Europe for the first time in its history.  The day of 27th October will be devoted to a series of meetings with political leaders, followed by the General Assembly.   The presence of more than 40 company Presidents in Beijing will be a strong symbol of the importance of China for the Comité Colbert.  “The Comité Colbert wants to demonstrate by this exceptional sign the importance of the intercultural links between China and France” said OlivierMellerio, Comité Colbert Chairman.  French art de vivre has a special relationship with the Middle Empire. Silk, jade, bronze, porcelain, furniture, China has always decorated our interiors, brightened our wardrobes, inspired the designers in our leading companies. The arts of enamel, lacquer or calligraphy, two-panels screens from Coromandel, jade statues, moonstone jewels, animal symbols of crested birds, tigers or dragons, tea caddies and sets, horses’ harnesses, gala floats… a few examples among so many, reminding us that China has not finished shining its unique light on the French luxury crafts.
