Web 2.0 seems to be everywhere at the moment. But are social science researchers using
it yet? And if they are, what are the implications for social science libraries?
The British Library has been looking at this issue to see how we might use web 2
technologies such as blogs, wikis, RSS, collaborative tagging and recommendations to
engage with our customers and deliver services. This article summarizes some of our
findings.
HOW ARE SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCHERS USING WEB 2.0?
There are a lot of websites with web 2 features that disseminate and discuss social
sciences. The table below gives an overview of the number and types of blogs, wikis and
podcasts about social science written in English and how they have grown in the six
months from April to September 2007. It is based on searches of Intute,Technorati’s blog
directory, Google, and Academic Blogs (a wiki listing blogs where the blogger has an
academic affiliation):

There’s no easy way to separate blogs based in the UK from the rest (Intute,Technorati and Academic Blogsdo not
search by domain ending ac.uk, for instance) – so these figures include international examples in English
