5 Tips for New Emergency Medicine Locums Emergency medicine is one of the most challenging specialties for new doctors. As a new doctor and a locum, you are in for some exciting challenges as you embark on your medical career. You will have the opportunity to experience things in the emergency department you would never be exposed to in other specialties, things that will add to your personal and professional growth throughout your career.

With that in mind, every new doctor goes through a transition period of trying to take what was learned in school and residency and apply it to a real-world career. Rarely do things go as planned. But if you can adapt and contribute, you will be just fine. Below are five tips to help you do just that. 1. Exercise Plenty of Patience We all want to come charging out of the gate and rise to the top of our professions right away. In a perfect world, that would be entirely possible for every emergency medicine doctor. But this is not a perfect world. It takes time to hone one's skills as both a doctor and a locum tenens professional. It takes time to get a handle on all of the ins and outs of everyday practice. So be patient and let it come to you rather than you trying to go seize it. A patient and purposeful approach will have you at the top of your game more quickly than you might believe. 2. Never Stop Learning A very important rule for every locum tenens professional is to never stop learning. It is one that is even more important for the emergency medicine doctor. Why? Because there is no such thing as a routine day in the emergency department. The ED doctor is constantly being exposed to all sorts of injuries, sicknesses, and diseases that challenge his or her skills and abilities. The more the locum learns, the better equipped he or she is to treat patients.

3. Embrace the ED Culture There is a certain culture in the emergency department that does not exist anywhere else in medicine. Where oncology, cardiology, or general surgery may have a hierarchy new locums have to get used to, the emergency department has more of a 'do whatever it takes to get it done' environment. By the way, this is not a bad thing. Many an emergency medicine physician loves his or her job for that very reason. There is no time for things that do not matter when there are so many patients to care for. 4. Keep Your Options Open You may have chosen emergency medicine as your lifelong career, but you also might change your mind in the future. One of the benefits of working as a locum tenens physician is that you get to visit multiple facilities in multiple locations. At each new facility, you have an opportunity to discover new ways of doing things. There may be other opportunities that open up to you in the future outside of emergency medicine. Keep your options open. 5. Enjoy Practicing Medicine Emergency medicine physicians enjoy a unique advantage in that they practice medicine in its purest form. The emergency department is all about treating patients in the here and now. As a locum, you have that opportunity over and over again with every new facility you work at.
