A Balanced Life: 5 Tips for Doctors You do not need to be told that being a doctor can be overwhelming at times. You are also fully aware that one of the most profound problems doctors face is balancing professional and personal life. Yet achieving a balanced life is necessary for your health and well-being. One thing doctors must never forget is that the medical profession is not unique in terms of stress, expectations, and work schedules. Doctors like to think they are unique, but nearly every profession shares some degree of similarity when it comes to stressed workers with an inability to balance professional and personal life. If you are a doctor who feels overwhelmed by your workload, you may need to step back and try to balance your life a little more. Here are five tips you can use to that end: 1. Seek out Good Advice Is it fair to say that doctors have a hard time asking advice from others about quality of life issues? Probably. However, doctors have at their disposal a vast wealth of wisdom and knowledge through their colleagues and, yes, even their patients. For example, many doctors would be amazed at the pearls of wisdom they can glean from elderly patients who may have 20 to 30 years more life experience. Seniors can give younger people many tips for work-life balance; doctors would be a wise to utilize them as a resource. 2. Find a Release Mechanism The overwhelming nature of medicine is often tied to an inability to leave one's work at the office. Nevertheless, here is the reality: no doctor can make the world a perfect place for his or her patients. Worrying about an ill patient when you should be spending time with family does not help that patient. You can only do so much. Having said that, finding an outlet for your stress can go a long way toward helping you balance your life better. Some doctors spend 20 to 30 minutes at the end of shift venting their emotions by writing in a journal. Others take a jog around the campus or join a colleague for a game of handball. Finding a stress release is a good idea no matter how you do it. 3. Schedule Time Off Doctors need to intentionally schedule time off just as workers in any other industry do. Then they need to hold themselves to that schedule. Trust us when we say that life in the office will go on without you. When you come to grips with the fact that you are not indispensable, you will find balancing your life a lot easier. 4. Avoid 'Talking Shop' There is a whole world out there that does not involve medicine. When you are away from work, do your utmost to avoid talking shop, reading medical journals, and so on. Find other things out there that interest you. There has to be something for youunless you are a zombie who has figured out how to practice medicine!

5. Make Time for the Spiritual Studies consistently show that people who have a spiritual aspect to their lives enjoy greater balance and better overall health and well-being. Yes, you can make time for the spiritual without betraying your loyalty to modern medicine. If you can find a way to nurture the spiritual, you will be a more balanced person. We hope these tips are helpful in your endeavor to achieve a more balanced life. Remember this: you cannot provide the best possible care to your patients if you are overwhelmed, overstressed, and on the verge of burnout.
