Abstract

Seen în terms o cuture, the theme o reîgîon and poîtîcs în Japan, as everywhere ese, îs compîcated, the more so because reîgîon în thîs country îs hîghy compîcated. Thîs essay—the aîm o whîch îs descrîptîve, not anaytîc—îs an attempt at drawîng a concrete pîcture o Shînto and Buddhîsm, both o whîch încorporate mutîpe strands o tradîtîona reîgîon. ït îs these that have shaped Japanese reîgîosîty and cuture. Poîtîcay promînent eatures are put up în ront so to speak: that îs, împressîons o a vîsît to the Yasukunî Shrîne and a note on Yasukunî as a reîgîous înstîtutîon. An account o reîgîous puraîsm and the ‘reîgîous dîvîsîon o abor’ constîtute the centra part, oowed by a sectîon on the characterîstîcs o reîgîon în Japan. Further, because reîgîousy and poîtîcay momentous, an addîtîona note îs încuded about the popuar îmage o Japan’s împerîa throne. Even though ï have been îvîng în Japan or orty-ive years, thîs was the irst tîme or me to trave to Tokyo or that purpose. ï ee excused or thîs negect sînce my study and work rom the begînnîng started and contînued în the Kansaî area, centerîng on Kyoto, the cutura capîta o the country, ocated ive hundred kîometers west o Tokyo. Besîdes, Japanese reîgîon was not a centra topîc o my study o the socîoogy o reîgîon. Certaîny, the îdea o takîng a ook at that amous and controversîa shrîne has oten crossed my mînd. Durîng the ast decade, the Yasukunî Shrîne was întermîttîngy în the news, due to oIcîa vîsîts by ormer Prîme Mînîster Koîzumî, învarîaby oowed by serîous objectîons rom countrîes îke Chîna and Korea (descrîbed by Okuyama Mîchîo în PRJ 2/2009: 240-49).
