Walter, Christological Themes in the Byzantine Marginal Psalters from the Ninth to the Eleventh Century. — The author, continuing a study begun by J.J. Tikkanen, attempts to identify the literary parallels for the Christological themes used to illustrate Psalm verses in the marginal Psalters. Of eighty subjects represented in the ninth-century Psalters, twelve may be directly related to the quotation of the Psalm in the New Testament. Thirty-seven themes have parallels in the Patristic commentators. Six have their earliest literary parallel in later Patristic writings. Twelve may be related to the use of the Psalm in Byzantine worship. For thirteen themes, the author has found no literary parallel. The illustrators of Christological themes in the eleventh-century Psalters sometimes modified the iconography but rarely innovated. Three of the four new themes which they introduced may be related to liturgical texts. 20 pages Source : Persée ; Ministère de la jeunesse, de l’éducation nationale et de la recherche, Direction de l’enseignement supérieur, Sous-direction des bibliothèques et de la documentation.
