Claude Monet: Fields in Spring
at Stuttgart State Gallery
From
20 May – 24 September 2006
Stuttgart State Gallery will present the exceptional
jubilee exhibition: Claude Monet: "Fields in Spring". The popular painting "Fields in Spring"
was the first Impressionist work to be acquired by the newly-founded "Stuttgarter
Galerieverein" exactly 100 years ago.
"Fields in Spring" is the starting-point of a unique exhibition focusing on forty main works. It
will promote an understanding of the diversity of artistic forms to be found in one of the
central themes of Monet's art: the portrayal of fields and meadows. The initial works are of
the fields in Argenteuil which the artist painted between 1873 and 1878. The varied spacing
of the brushwork gives these early depictions of fields great vitality and vibrant tension. To
these natural scenes Monet frequently added an elegant city lady with a parasol and a little
boy, using his wife Camille and his young son, Jean, as models.
Parallel to Monet's move to Giverny in 1883, the Impressionist movement became
increasingly established as the most important trend in the contemporary French art of the
day, with Monet as its leading representative. It was also in Giverny that the central work of
the exhibition, "Fields in Spring", was created in 1887. It marks a turning-point in Monet's
oeuvre, combining a typical theme of Impressionist painting with a remarkably rigid
structuring and strongly systematised coloration.
The exhibition concludes with a selection of the fascinating poplar paintings of 1891, in which
the systematic progression of fields in spring is continued and brought to completion. By this
time art critics had already come to appreciate the originality of Monet's innovative treatment
of natural themes as an outstanding quality of his art. Monet's admirer and fellow-artist, Paul
Signac, wrote for instance, "But no, Monsieur Monet, you are no Naturalist. In nature trees
are not blue, people are not violet, and it is to your great credit that you have painted them
exactly as you perceive them, for love of beautiful colours, and not as they really are."
