Correct LED Lights: A Shiny Future Chances are, you already know that LED (light-emitting diodes) bulbs perform very well in flashlights. You might even realize how good they are for camping lights, fairy lights, signs, security lights, computers and indicator lights. But are you cognizant of the fact that recent technological advances may have brought us to a new era in LED lighting for the home? General Electric has recently put out a 40-watt LED bulb for general home lighting, after they made a thermal breakthrough that allowed them to keep the bulbs cool enough. Another design breakthrough helped in making the new 40-watt bulbs’ light less directional. The bulbs are surrounded by a plastic casing that has a series of fins that disperses the bulbs’ light throughout the entire room. LED bulbs still don’t disperse the light out as well as fluorescent tubes, but they’re improving. In some ways, LED lights are better than fluorescent lights. LED's, unlike compact fluorescent's (CFLs), contain no mercury, which CFL tubes give off when they break. LED lights have a life than fluorescent tubes, and they’re a lot less likely to break. LED'senergy saving bulbsfull lumination immediately when you turn them on, and they work attain much better in cool places than fluorescent lights do. Unlike fluorescent tubes, LED bulbs aren’t harmed by being turned on and off frequently. LED's are smaller and come in just about any shape. And LED bulbs draw less power than fluorescent tubes. The primary drawbacks with using LED's for general home lighting have been the cost, the poor quality of light and the one-directional nature of the light, but engineers have been making progress in all of these areas. An additional problem with LED's bulbs is that they fade or can fail altogether in high temperatures. Also, they’re sensitive to fluctuations in either voltage or amperage. But there are a few applications where LED's are clearly better than incandescent and fluorescent lights. LED's are great for flashlights because the bulbs last a long time and they drain batteries a lot more slowly than incandescents. LED's work well in cold conditions, and they focus light well. LED's are reliable in camping, biking and other portable conditions, since they don’t break when you drop them, nor do they burn out suddenly, the way incandescent bulbs do.  ww w . t a b l e l a m p s u k . c o mL a m p1
Unlike incandescent and fluorescent lights, LED lights, when used as coloured lights, don’t require coloured filters. That, in combination with their low heat output and small size, is why LED's are so popular for Christmas lights or indicator lights. Consumers have been hesitant about usingenergy saving light bulbs becauseof the high initial cost, especially in comparison to incandescent lighting. But that may soon be changing. In an energy initiative, the U.S. Congress recently passed a bill enacting the phase-out of energy-gobbling incandescent household bulbs, beginning in 2012. LED lighting has an illuminating future ahead of it.
