Documents 1 and 2:
I. In document 2, Dominic Hobson compares sport to war. Find one verb in document 1
that also associates sport with war.
In document one, the Olympian runner refers to running the hills of his country as
conquering them: ““and I believe I have conquered every one”, this verb conveys a message
strongly related to war.
J. Choose the right answer and justify for EACH document by quoting the texts. In both
documents, the children believe the ultimate motivation in sport is
1- having a nice body.
2- earning a lot of money.
3- being the winner. Document 1: The runner explains that in order to keep running, he makes himself remember “how it 25 feels to win” (line 24-25).
Document 2: The father justifies his son’s disappointment by outlining the true nature of
sports; “Sport is war - it is about the loss, as well as the gain” (line 14). Since failure has
upset his son, what motivates him to do better must be to win.

Peter: Thank you for allowing me to visit with you today! I have so many questions and am
so excited to hear what you have to say!
Hope: I am glad to be here, Peter. Thanks for inviting me.
Peter: First off, how old were you when you first realized your potential to be an amazing
soccer player?
Hope: My earliest memories involve playing with the soccer ball in my back yard! It was just very natural to me.
Peter: Had you ever dreamed that you would be and Olympic Gold Medalist?
Hope: Not at all! I am very enthusiastic about my sport; and I am very happy that I did win,
as I have put a lot of work and effort to be where I am today; however, as a child, I only thought it was a dream. Peter: If you were to give one piece of advice to all the youth soccer players in the world,
who want to be as great as you, what would it be? Hope: Always work hard to realize your dreams and never let one failure stop you. Peter: Thank you for your time! I cannot wait to see you in your next match!

thème du sport. Ne pas oublier les alinéas etc... Choisir UNE équipe et se concentrer sur ce
sport en particulier. Parler de ses « accomplishments », de son expérience, et de ce que l'on
pourrait apporter à l'équipe.
