COMPREHENSION.EXPRESSION1. a)The narrator is present (ex : « I shout » (line 2)). Salim is present (ex : “he declares” (line 5)). Armaan Ali is only mentioned. Urvashi Randhawa is only mentioned. b)Salim is an employee who works for Gawli Tiffin Carriers (line 18). His job consists in delivering lunch boxes to customers (line 10). Armaan Ali is an actor (“the actor” (line 12)). Urvashi Randhawa is a famous model (“modelling career” (line 29)). c)We can say that Armaan Ali is Salim's idol, a kind of Godlike character. (“Something even better than winning the lottery. I have seen Armaan Ali” (line 7)). 2.a)Salim refers to the moment when he saw his idol, Armaan Ali (“I have seen Armaan Ali” (line 7)) and especially when Armaan Ali looked at him (“His eyes made contact with Salim's” (line 15)). b)“Something even better than winning the lottery “ (line 7) can also underline the fact that what happened on that day was more important than Salim's life in general. “narrowly missing being run down by a car” (line 1112). This quotation shows that when Salim encountered Armaan Ali, it was more important than his life. “A customer of Gawli Tiffin Carriers went hungry that afternoon” (line 18). This quotation shows that when Salim encountered Armaan Ali, it was more important than his job. 3.Throughout the text we can understand that Salim and Armaan Ali belong to two separate worlds. Indeed, Armaan Ali is wealthy according to the different elements in the text : he is an actor (line 12), drives a MercedesBenz (line 9) and goes to luxury hotels (“a fivestar hotel” (line 10)). Contrary to Armaan, Salim uses the public transport (“travelling on a bus” (line 10)) and he is an employee (“deliver his last tiffin box to a customer” (line 10)). Finally, we can say that Armaan's life has to do with “face, fame, and fortune” (line 25) whereas Salim's life only lies on “his meager salary” (line 32). 4.a)According to the narrator, Armaan “seems to have it all – face, fame and fortune” (l25). However, Salim thinks differently : “You are wrong”, he answers back to the narrator. Indeed, he then explains that Armaan “does not have Urvashi” (l26). Thus, Salim refers to the Armaan Urvashi breakup (l27). b)What is important to say is that event not only affects the person concerned, that is to say Armaan, but it also affects Salim : “I see Salim crying” (l30).
