DISTRICT - TWICE EACH TERM

153rd Edition
20 December 2011

Dear Parents, Caregivers and
Friends of the School

Thursday night’s prizegiving
proved to be one of the
highlights of the 2011 school
year, superbly coordinated
once again by deputy
principal Mrs Colleen Dalley.

Stars of the night were our
twenty Year 8 students who were farewelled in grand style.

The top award of the evening (The Forrest Award) went to Charlie Nimmo
pictured (centre) above. She is flanked by runners up Rosa Marshall and
Nicholas Goodwin.

Student Achievement Targets: Each teacher had
Hunterville School target students (no names supplied to the Board) for
Board of Trustees
improving writing achievement and for monitoring
Parent Representatives: the effectiveness of the writing programme. As well,
Fi Dalgety (Chairperson) teachers have been monitoring ALL students in the
Grant Collie school identified as being “below” in writing at this
Angela Duxfield time last year. Results were:
James Kilmister • Of the 31 students one year below expectation
Richard Lambert
a year ago, all have improved one year or more
Chris Price
and there are now 16 of these students one
Staff Representative year below expectation
Colleen Dalley • Of the twelve students two years below
Principal expectation a year ago, eleven have improved
Stephen Lewis one year or more and there are now six of
these students two years below expectation.

The above results are very pleasing and reflects a schoolwide focus this year on
our writing programmes.

Teacher Appointment – Miss Jessica Leary: In the November edition of this
newsletter we announced a new teacher for Room3 next year. This person had
accepted the position in writing. Unfortunately she resigned shortly after as she
received a “better offer” in her home- town. We understand that and wished
her well. Fortunately, we were able to offer the job to Jessica Leary who had
impressed the appointments committee considerably.
Miss Leary is a former student of our school – and was runner up to Best All
Round Pupil at our 1996 prize giving! Miss Leary is the daughter of Chalky and
Lesley Leary from the Mangahoe Valley. She is well known to us at school and
we are delighted that she has accepted the position.
Miss Leary comes to us as a beginning teacher and will be a most welcome
addition to our staff.

School Exterior Paint: It is hoped to give the exterior of the school a spruce up
over the holidays. BOT property officer Chris Price will be liaising with paint
contractors to oversee this project, with the intention of having us look our best
for the reunion at Easter.

3
Generous Donation: The BOT has received a generous cash donation from the
Mangahoe Bus Society plus the gift of their van soon, which is in the process of
being replaced. This was extremely timely as the board was looking at
purchasing a school mini van. The BOT is astounded, and very grateful for this
generous gesture.

Hall Wall Mural: BOT, staff and student representatives met with mural artist
Marc Spijterbosch at school recently to scope the finer details of the mural. The
mural will be created off site on special aluminium boards and erected in late
February. Watch this space!

Next Meeting: Thursday 9 February 7:30pm

Year 8 Dinner – Station Hotel 12 December 2011

It was 6 o’clock and one by one Year 8’s and their parents arrived at the Station
Hotel. Dressed in our finest outfits, we all looked amazing. After a few photos
and everyone had arrived we were let in. We were all led out the back to a big
beautiful marquee. In the marquee there were several smaller tables and one
big long one for us year 8’s. We chose where we would sit for the rest of the
night and then got settled in to look at our placemats covered in photos from all
our years at Hunterville.
We were served with punch or water and then onto dinner. For dinner we had a
lovely pumpkin salad, beef cube roll, ham off the bone, salad and potatoes.
After that came dessert. We were offered fruit, cream, custard and Christmas
pudding. It all tasted amazing and looked great! From the meal we moved onto
speeches.
First went Mr Lewis, to Ellen Carlyon, then Mrs Dalley and then myself. After we
had spoken Mrs Dalgety stood up and said a few words as well as some students
and parents saying small thank yous. The night then ended with some dancing
and chatting. It was so much fun and we had some great laughs. Thank you to
Mrs Dalley and Mr Lewis for everything you did. Also to Sandy and Brian from
the Station for accommodating us all so well!
