Spanish ICourse Guide Señora Scott Teacher Contact Information School phone:986-4000 Voice mail:986-1499 ext. 8137 E-mail: Veronica.Scott@leesummit.k12.mo.us Course Description This is a two semester course that teaches the fundamentals of Spanish and introduces the cultures ofSpanish-speakers. Itemphasizes the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing; the use of practical vocabulary (greetings, school, leisure activities, family, food); and elementary grammar. Students listen to and tell stories, write short creative stories, develop reading skills. Activeclass participation is essential.Because this class emphasizes communication, regular attendance is required. Instructional Philosophy The (TPRS) Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling method is the approach employed in this course. The Spanish language is acquired through comprehensible input. The student is focused on the meaning of the message rather than the language.Vocabulary is initially introduced by associating it with a physical gesture.Short memorable scenarios that use the new words in authentic language structures are then introduced. The teacher narrates these scenarios and asks questions about the content of these scenarios while students act them out. Practice with a partner often occurs next and finally in a mini-story, the students will be reading the language and retelling the story from visuals.Stories are also retold in different verb tenses to further the practice of verb forms and grammar. Finally, students are encouraged to use the vocabulary creatively by writing and presenting orally their own original stories in the foreign language. Major Course Goals 1. Studentswill develop a basic Spanish vocabulary including gender, meaning and spelling. 2. Studentswill use correct vocabulary to write and to speak in Spanish about various topics and to communicate in life situations. 3.
