4. MAYORAL ELECTION

Introduction

In accordance with Section 71 of the Local Government Act 1989, at a meeting of the Council that
is open to the public, the Councillors must elect a Councillor to be the Mayor of the Council. This
election must take place after the last Saturday in November but not later than 31 December after
the previous Mayoral election.

Section 72 of the Local Government Act states that the office of the Mayor becomes vacant at
6:00am. on the day of the election of the Mayor.

In accordance with Council’s Local Law No. 1, the Chief Executive Officer (or delegate) will preside
for the purposes of the election of the Mayor.


4.1 Election of Mayor

In accordance with Council's Local Law No. 1 the Chief Executive Officer (or delegate) will call for
nominations for the Office of the Mayor.

If there is only one candidate, he or she is elected Mayor.

If there are two or more candidates, the presiding officer will step down and the Council will
nominate and appoint a Councillor who has not nominated for the office of Mayor to preside and
deal with the election of the Mayor.

If there are two or more candidates, the person presiding must call for a vote by a show of hands
(the election of Mayor must not be done by secret ballot). The candidate who receives the
majority vote is elected Mayor. A request to the
