initial bow the public in Paris as a Christmas bookto

Jeanne Mairet, although in 'reality an American by
birth, bas become so identified with lier husband's
country, that she lias been accepted in the Parisian lit-
erary world as one of that exclusive set. She is so well
known in the class-room through her Tâche du Petit
Pierre that she needs no introduction to the American
public.
La Tâche du Petit Pierre was prepared for young
children beginning to learn the French language. L'En-
Lune is arranged readerfant de la as a for rather more
advanced pupils. The children who hâve gone through
La Tâche du Petit Pierre hâve learned their auxiliary
verbs and understand the use of a vocabulary; it has
therefore been considered advisable in this book to sup-
press ail grammatical notes.
The exercises for retranslation from English into
French, which correspond to the text of each chapter,
hâve been turned into English corresponding as nearly
as possible to the French words, niaking often a trans-L ENFANT DE LA LUNE
lation vvhich is too literal for élégance, but which will
facilitate the pupils' work of retranslation.
The questions following each chapter are printed in
French and the pupils will, by their ansvvers, show how
well they hâve understood the text.
