Andrés SANJUAN, Rapporteur Abstract The scientific community has awakened for the fact that if the fishing grounds are not well studied and preserved in a few years some of them, if not most, will be depleted and the social and economical factors involved in that are enormous. So, in the last years several techniques highly specific (DNA based techniques) have arisen to help solving the problems involved in managing great quantity of individuals which are, normally, in constant movement and especially because they are not bound to country borders. In this work four of these techniques (Allozymes, RFLP, SSCP and Microsatellites) were used in four species (Merluccius merluccius (hake), Aphnopus carbo (black scabbardfish), Trachurus trachurus (horse mackerel) and Sardina pilchadurs (sardine)) which are economically very important, not only for Portugal, but for several other countries.
