5 Top Swimming Pool Maintenance Tips from the Experts
If you've gone to all the trouble and expense of having a swimming pool installed then you're going to want to maintain it in tip top condition. Below are 5 tips that will help you do this without taking up hours and hours of your precious swimming time.
1. Use a pool cover every time you are not using the pool
Using a pool cover is always a smart choice. Pool covers are great, they can keep warmth in the pool extending your swimming season. Pool covers keep out leaves, dirt and other debris. And pool covers also stop water evaporation from the sun. Evaporation and continual topping up of the pool increases chemical costs, or if not looked after properly a lack of chemicals will lead to problems. The best pool covers are sized and shaped to customer fit your pool, leaving no gap for the water to contact the open air.
Taking a pool cover on and off a pool can be a problem if the pool cover is large, the pool water is too low, there is insufficient space, you only have 1 person. I prefer to use a roller, as this is the quickest and easiest way. At the more expensive range pool cover rollers can be electrically powered, and even hidden away under false desks.
If you have the right setup it only takes a minute or so to take the cover on an off the pool.
2. Check you chemicals levels weekly
We wont go into chemicals too much here as there are two different common chemical balances chlorine and salt. Depending on which you use is a personal choice. The important thing about maintenance is that the chemicals are kept up. For the safety of you, and your pool, regular testing at least on a weekly basis in the swimming months is highly recommended.
3. Check your pools pH levels weekly
The pH (or acidity) of your pool water is vitally important for a back yard swimming pools overall water condition. Imbalances in the pH quickly lead to water condition problems. Care should be taken to make sure water condition is maintained throughout the non-swimming months. You don’t want to let the pool water go off, and then lose the first month of the swimming season as you battle to bring the water back to good health.
Fortunately it is again a simple exercise to check your water balance. If you do this when you check your other chemicals it only takes a few minutes. Recommend to check chemicals and pH every week in the swimming season, and at least every month in the off season.
4. Skim leaves and vacuum dirt often
Keeping leaves, pet fur and dirt out of the swimming pool makes it much easier to maintain the water balance chemicals. It also makes for a nicer looking pool if the water is sparkling clean. For a long time now automatic pool vacuums have been in the market, unfortunately some work better than others. Make sure you don’t waste your money on a pool vacuum that isn’t well rated.
It is generally an easy task to skim leaves, taking only a few minutes of your time. If manually vacuuming, this can take significantly more to do the job properly. I actually enjoy vacuuming, usually because I work up a sweat and then can take a refreshing swim. One trick is to use a broom to firstly sweep the dirt off the bottom of the pool floor into a small corner, and then vacuum that small area.
5. Make sure your filters are in good order
Pool filters should probably be number 1 on this list. If a pool filter gets clogged with dirt it becomes far less efficient, that means that less water will flow through it, you pump works harder costing more electricity, and the water may suffer from under filtering.
I like to use a skimmer basket stocking to catch fine material that would otherwise bypass the skimmer basket, this save the filter a lot, and cleaning filters is not a quick job.
Another tip is to never turn on the pool pump and vacuum if you are using a flocculent to catch suspended debris in the water column. A flocculent will quickly clog the filter beyond repair.
So if you are considering installing a pool, or have just bought a house with a pool in it, it is always significant to recall that just because you are using your pool for personal purposes - it is still imperative to keep the pool in good condition and always looking it best. This way, you can be sure you are protecting your family's health and having your asset available and ready to use when you want it.
This is the day and age when people think about their comforts more than anything else. There are many ways to achieve a level of overall comfort. Those who have the luxury of affording it want a swimming pool and/or spa pool at home. Installing a pool is just the start of the journey, it is the continual investment of time and money into maintenance that is most important and often overlooked.Although it doesn’t have to be time consuming, expensive, or a chore if maintenance is done properly.
Of course you can always outsource your pool maintenance, but if you choose to personally handle this task, you need to purchase the necessary equipment and supplies, but on the flip side you will be well rewarded with many hours of family fun splashing around and cooling off.
