Ideal Floor Lamps Is there a room in your house with overhead lighting that is inadequate or overbearing? Or one with a corner that’s dark? Or maybe you just need a reading lamp. For these needs and more, you ought to think about getting a floor lamp. No other lamp is as versatile as a floor lamp. A floor lamp can go almost anyplace in almost any room and give you almost any type of light. Can you get any more versatile than that? You have a wide assortment of floor lamps to choose from to fill your particular lighting needs and to suit your home’s decor. Torchiere Torchiere lamps feature a straight pole with a bulb at the top that has a shade that is inverted. Torchieres directwall lights towardthe ceiling, and the light gets reflected throughout the room. These lamps obviously work best with a white ceiling, but any light-coloured ceiling will work. The light from a torchiere is much more mellow than from an overhead light, but it isn’t well-suited for task work or reading. Some torchiere lamps have a second lamp on the side that directs light downward for close work. Club These are pole lamps that have a bulb at the top with a regular shade over it. If you put one of these in the centre of a room, it will provide a mellow general light to most or all of the room, and a strong light right underneath the lamp. A three-way switch comes standard with club lamps. You can sometimes adjust thechandeliersheight of these lamps. Others have multiple bulbs for extra lighting. Glass Tray These fancy club lamps have a glass tray built into the lamp at table height. These are nice for small spaces, as they serve as both an end table and a lamp.

Directional This is a pole lamps with swivel lamps on the side that can focus light in any direction. If you point the lamps upward, they’ll act somewhat like a torchiere. If you want lighting for close work, you can point one or more of the lamps downward. These can also point sideways, allowing multiple people to use them simultaneously. Arch (or Arc) These have an arch that extends sideways, with the lamplight pointing downward, into the lap of a seated person. With some arch lamps, you can swing the arch from side to side. Others have multiple arms that flex. Cordless These are small, LED arch lamps that run on flashlight batteries. You can easily carry these lamps from room to room, and you don’t need an outlet for them, so you can put them anywhere. You can quickly convert some cordless lamps into atable lamp. Down Bridge This type is similar to an arch type, except that the arch doesn’t extend very far at all. They come with a shade and usually have a sophisticated, conventional look. Pharmacy These resemble a down bridge lamp, though they don’t have a shade. Here, the top of the pole bends at a right angle, directing the light straight downward. These are functional, task-oriented lamps with an adjustable height. Tower These are made of a translucent tower that encases a number of light bulbs from top to bottom. These provide ambient light only, and often serve as a centrepiece for a room. They come in a number of designs, including some that look like Asian-styled lanterns and others that resemble modern sculpture.
