FARWELL & CO., PEINTERS TO THE CITY, Congress Street.No. 37 1 8 6 G .NETH- PUBUC TiLoSr'OONDATlONa, 1904* NOTICE.PREFATORY anoffering to their fellow-citizensThe Trustees of the Public Library have much satisfaction in Institution committed to theirimportant additional or supplementary Index of books contained in the care. — — about fifty-five thousandThe Index published in July, 1861, comprised, excluding duplicates, all receivedvolumes, which had been placed Bates Hall previous to October, 1859 ;in the Upper or positions under the aljihabeticalafter that date not having come in season to find their appropriate Institution, beenarrangement adopted. Since that period there have, by the report of the officers of the twentyvolumes, forty-one hundred andreceived in the Bates Hall forty-four thousand and seventy Index, although each enteredof which again came to hand too late to be inserted in the present 1% eighty-all in the Library. Fifty-nine hundred andin ihe interleaved copy ofthe Index of 1861, open to — such,— many of which, thoughthree more are duplicates, chiefly donations, indeed almost entirely desirable and important, do not, of course, need to be a second time announced. There remain, therefore, volumes, which are represented in the presentthirty-three thousand nine hundred and sixty-six Index. Of the whole number above mentioned, viz., forty-four thousand and seventy volumes,— eleven— thousand bequest of the late Rev. During the progress of the index, the titles of new books have been inserted whenever the title and cross-references came under letters not already printed, but in some cases, e. g. under the names of Boston authors, titles have been inserted wlien it was too late for the cross-references, and under were insertedthe names of Mr. Everett and Pres. Lincoln the cross-references when the titles could not be. The Index to the City Documents, from 1834- to 1865, appended by permission to this Index, was prepared by Mr. James M. Bugbee, now Clerk of Committees of the City Council.
