aptly said. There is at first the wearisome toil ofI
collecting the words and expressions and putting them
order, then comparing thisin alphabetical collection with
other dictionaries and completing it accordingly, and at
last there is the copying out of the collection in order to
give it the desired shape. The latter part of the work
alone took 12 months.
The genesis of this work may be briefly told. In
capacityhis as interpreter at the Hamburg Law Courts,
the author felt at the beginning a great want for a
handy and complete nautical dictionary, and, therefore,
set at once to work collect the wordsto and phrases
picked up from the examination of witnesses and the
study of log books. If, therefore, he was not a nautical
man, awakeyet he was wide as to what was required
of such book.
The compass of the book would not admit any
explanation for technicalities which, moreover, would
have necessitated the collaboration of nautical and
engineering people. There are some few books of similar
description edited experts with plenty of explanations,by
and it might, therefore, be thought there was no occasion
for this publication of an outsider. However, such books
are more voluminous than complete, and more instructive
than practical. A translator, whether professional or not,
wants to get the translation of a word at one glance
it is in the first line quite indifferent to him what the
word really signifies. Strict alphabetical order throughout
the book, absence of illustrations and explanations, are,
therefore, essential for facilitating his task. If a word
has various applications, the difference is always made
sufficiently clear without becoming in-any attempt at
structive.
In the German part it has been found requisite to
give the gender of the substantives, rather, the genderor,
that is more commonly usedused, for some words are
both in the masculine, feminine, and neuter gender, in

words will soon be grasped by the user of this book,
so that its wants no special explanation, its adoption
was absolutely necessary for turning out a POCKET
DICTIONAKY at a reasonable price, it would otherwise
have become a very voluminous book, considering that
it was a matter of words and phrases.50,000
For the same reason the description of words as to
substantives, adjectives, verbs, &c, as well as the con-
stantly recurring preposition "to" before verbs has been
generally omitted, for the words of the other language
were deemed to be a sufficient suggestion on this head.
there is anything that annoyed me in all dic-If
tionaries it is the frequent cross reference to other words
instead of the translation then and there. While care-
fully perusing other dictionaries for the purpose of
completing mine, I have generally found that such cross
up more space than translationsreferences took the
consequently, avoidedwould have required. I have,
such cross references unless where whole articles were
concerned.
Though not specially intended for the Navy, the
nevertheless, be found of good service tobook will,
for naval terms.those who refer to the same
