Horridas sombras, horridos vapores,  Que enlutais estes ares carregados  Por onde vão fogindo os meus clamores;

Sinistras Aves, que funestos brados  Espalhais de Cyprestes luctuosos,  Pela negra Tristeza bafejados;

A vós consagro os prantos dolorosos,  Que meus olhos derramão contra a dura,  Antiga ley dos Fados poderosos;

Antiga ley, que á feia sepultura  Arroja sem respeito, e sem piedade  A Virtude, a Grandeza, a Formosura!

Aspera ley, que a pobre Humanidade  N'um momento, n'um átomo arremessa  Ao centro da medonha Eternidade!

Tremendissima ley, que tão depressa  Troca em ais, e desgostos a alegria;  Troca a Purpura em luto, o solio em Eça.

Ah! Nunca amanhecera o cruel dia,  Esse dia fatal, que tu seguiste,  Noite de espanto, noite de agonia.

Téjo, que foste da Tragédia triste  O Theatro infeliz, que he do Thesoiro,  Que a meus olhos saudosos encobriste?

Ah! Não blazones das arêas de oiro,  Se em ti contens o Heróe, que ao proprio Marte  Esperava ganhar a palma, o loiro.

Jozé, que, reunindo a força, e a Arte,  Feros Brutos indómitos domava,  Sendo assombro de tudo em toda a parte;

Jozé, que os luzos Póvos alegrava,  E que, sem recordar-se da grandeza,  A todos brandamente agazalhava;

Jozé, com quem a sorte, e a natureza  Forão tão liberaes, e em quem luzia  Resto feliz da gloria Portugueza.

Oh lugubre Destino! Oh Morte impia!  Illustre, e velho Pai! Tua amargura  Quão rigorosa, quão cruel seria!

A macilenta clotho, a Parca dura  Te roubou para sempre o Filho amado,  O doce objecto da maior ternura.

Queixa-te, he justo, queixa-te do Fado,  O negro caso deploravel chora,  Em nossas faces pela Dor gravado;

Pragueja aquelle Monstro, que devora

 Os miseros mortaes, dize-lhe… ah! antes  Antes a summa Providencia adora.

Adora a quem nos Astros scintilantes  Erigio, colocou seu Throno eterno,  O supremo Senhor dos Ceos brilhantes,

O Justo Deos, que com poder superno  Escondeo, ferrolhou perpetuamente  Os rebeldes espiritos no Inferno.

Elle, movendo o braço Omnipotente,  O filho te chamou, que merecia  Gloria immortal no Empireo reluzente.

Basta, excelso Marquez. Tua agonia  Pela Fé seja em fim modificada,  E por huma Christãa Filosofia.

Que tambem na minha alma atribulada  Oiço o rizo da candida Esperança,  Sinto a terrivel Dor mais aplacada.

E tu, Alma gentil, que na lembrança  Tão presente me estás, Alma ditosa,  Entre os Córos Angelicos descança.

Não precisa de lagrimas quem goza  De eterna, de immortal Felicidade,  Por isso he nossa dor infrutuosa;

Porém, com tudo, lá da Eternidade,  Do centro da Ventura mais perfeita,

 

 

 

 

Se te he possivel, feliz Alma, aceita

Tudo acaba. Esse Monstro carrancudo,  Próle do Avérno, effeito do Peccado,  Tudo a cinza reduz, brandindo, irado,  Com sanguinosas mãos o ferro agudo.

Oh fatal Desengano, horrendo, e mudo,  Em pavorosos marmores gravado!  Oh letreiros da Morte! Oh ley do Fado!  He verdade, he verdade: acaba tudo.

Eis o nosso miserrimo Destino:  Assim o ordena quem nos Ceos impéra;  Basta, adoremos o Poder Divino.

Reprime os passos, caminhante, espera,  E no Epitafio do infeliz Jozino  Lê o teu nada, o que tu és pondéra.
