Book Report Grades 1–3
The Book Report Grades 1–3 instant-activity kit
includes the Book Report Hatchet activity, the Book
Report Grades 1–3 Template, and a PDF file of this
tutorial. You can find these components by opening the
Language Arts Templates folder and then the Book
Report folder in the New area of
Classroom Suite
.
The Book Report Grades 1–3 Template is designed for
you to prepare an activity focused on one of three
available stories (
Charlotte’s Web
, by E. B. White,
Little
Red Riding Hood
, and
Three Billy Goats Gruff
). In
addition, you can import your own pictures and create a
similar report form for a story of your choice.
In this tutorial, you will start by exploring the Book
Report Hatchet activity. Later in the tutorial, you will
learn to create customized book report activities, using
the Book Report Grades 1–3 Template.
Universal Design
The activities you create using the Book Report Grades
1–3 Template and
Classroom Suite
are designed for all
students, including those with physical or cognitive
disabilities.

Introduction
Create a Folder for Your New
Activities
When you use this template, you will be creating new
activities for your students to use. To organize these
activities, you will want to create your own folder in the
Activities area of
Classroom Suite.
1. At the Navigation Page, click the Activities button.
Click the New Folder button on the right side of
the screen. A dialog box will ask you to name the
folder. Give it the name of one of your classes
(e.g., Mrs. Smith’s Class).
2. Open the Book Report Grades 1–3 Template (see
page 3).
3. When you complete your work with the template
and click the Finish Activity button, the Save As
Activity dialog appears. Name your new activity,
select the folder in which you want to place your
work, and click OK. Your new activity will now be
available for you to assign to students.

Part 1: Exploring the Book Report Hatchet Activity
Students use this activity to report on reading and
study of a specific text,
Hatchet
, by Gary Paulsen. The
activity can be used as the focus for a class discussion,
as a book report, or as a presentation.
Opening Book Report Hatchet
1. Sign in to
Classroom Suite
as a Teacher (see
Getting Started in the
Classroom Suite
binder). The
Navigation Screen displays.
2. Click the New button, if it is not already selected.
Open the Language Arts Templates folder.
3. Open the Book Report folder and choose Book
Report Hatchet.
Exploring Book Report Hatchet
Book Report Hatchet opens with an animation of a
plane flying over a mountain scene. Editing toolbars
display at the top of the page. At the right, a toolbar
provides images that relate to the story.
1. Click the arrow in the center of the picture. The
menu page that displays links to pages about
various story elements.
This is a nonlinear report. Select pages in any
order and return to the menu page to choose
another topic.
2. Click the Setting button. The Setting page displays,
with three text boxes containing discussion points.
Click the answer fields in the text boxes to write
about the topic.
No answers have been specified for the answer
fields in Book Report Hatchet. However, all
student responses entered in answer fields will be
recorded and printed if you generate a student
report.
3. Click the map of Canada, in the toolbar to the right
of the page. The map appears on the page behind
the text boxes. While it is still selected, click twice
on the Make Bigger button in the Transform
toolbar. The image now fills the page.
The Transform toolbar is only active when a
picture is selected. Click the text box. The
Transform toolbar turns gray (not active).
4. Click the picture of the open book, at the top right
corner of the page, to return to the menu page.

Adding a Keyboard to the Screen
1.
Click the Show Letters button. A keyboard displays
at the bottom of the screen.
Pressing the 1..2..3 button will change the
keyboard to a number pad. Pressing A..B..C will
return it to a keyboard.
2. Click the Hide Letters button to hide the keyboard.
Using Spell Check and Word Prediction
Book Report Hatchet helps develop writing fluency by
providing students with tools to assist them, such as
Spell Check and word prediction.
1. Return to the Setting page by clicking the Book
button and then the Setting button.
2. Complete the sentence in box two by typing
the
wilderness of Canada.
Remove the “d” from
wilderness, so it is misspelled.
3. Click the Spell Check button. Select the option that
is correct.
4. Click the Word Prediction button. Begin typing in
the next answer field:
the airplane crashes in
the woods
. Notice that a toolbar of suggested
words displays at the bottom of the page. Click any
word on this toolbar to enter it into your text.
5. Click the Word Prediction button again to close it.
Recording Sound
If you have a microphone connected to your computer,
you can add sounds to each page of the book report.
1. Select a page to which you would like to add a
sound. Click the Add Sound button.
2. A Record Sound dialog box opens for the page you
have chosen. Record a sound of your own, or click
the Import button to add a sound you have saved in
another location.
3. Close this activity without saving it.
Once students have completed their book reports, they
can save their work and click the Slide Show button to
view their story as a slide show. You can use this Book
Report activity immediately with students.
In the next part of this tutorial, you will use the Book
Report Grades 1–3 Template to create additional book
report activities for your primary grade students.

The Book Report Grades 1–3 Template is designed to
help you to create book report activities suitable for
primary grade students. This template provides
resources for
Charlotte’s Web
,
Little Red Riding Hood
,
and
Three Billy Goats Gruff
. You can easily add
resources for other books your students are reading.
Opening the Book Report Template
1. From the Navigation Screen, click the New button.
2. Open the Language Arts Templates folder.
3. Open the Book Report folder and choose the Book
Report Gr1–3 Template. The Book Report Gr1–3
Template displays.
4. See the instructions on page 1 of this tutorial to
learn how to create a special folder to store the new
activities you make with this and other templates in
Classroom Suite
.
5. From the File menu, select Save As Activity. Save
your activity as
Report Red Riding Hood
. It will
now be saved into the Activities folder.
Editing the Book Title
1. The Book Report Template has a toolbar with
authoring instructions at the top to help you create
your activity.
2. Click the Little Red Riding Hood button at the right
edge of the screen. Eight buttons with pictures
from Little Red Riding Hood display at the bottom
of the screen.
3. Click the green Start Over button to see the other
choices. Click Little Red Riding Hood again to
continue with this tutorial.
4. Select the word Title and type in the title of your
story, Red Riding Hood.
5. Hold down the Control key and simultaneously
click the text box (
[Ctrl]+click
).
6. The Properties of Text Box dialog box displays.
Click the check box next to Read-Only Text, so that
the story title cannot be changed.
If you want your students to name their own
stories, skip steps 5 and 6.
In the next section of the tutorial, you will learn to
customize the questions provided in the report
template.
Part 2: Using the Book Report Grades 1–3 Template

Customizing Questions
1. Click the blue arrow to move to page 2, the menu
page.
2. The menu page includes five buttons: Characters,
Setting, Plot, Illustration, and Recommendation.
Each button links to a page where students write
about that topic.
3. Click the Characters button. The Characters page
displays. Text boxes ask students to provide
information about the characters in the book they
have read.
4. Click the text box. Notice it reads aloud. Answer
fields provide space for students to add their own
text.
5. To edit the text in any text box,
[Ctrl]+click
the
text box. The Properties of Text Box dialog box
displays.
6. Deselect (remove the check mark) from Read-Only
Text and click OK to close the dialog box.
7. Edit any of the text in that text box, to ask the
questions you want the students to answer.
8. When you have finished editing the text,
[Ctrl]+click
the text box and place a check mark
next to Read-Only Text. Now the new text will read
aloud.
9. Click the book button at the top right corner of the
page to return to the menu page. Continue
modifying questions on each page, if you like.
In the next section of the tutorial, you will learn to
specify answers, if you wish to do so.
Part 2: Using the Book Report Grades 1–3 Template

Specifying Answers
1. To specify a certain answer to any of your
questions, place the cursor in the middle of the
answer field and
[Ctrl]+click
. The Properties of
Answer Field dialog box displays.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your
expected answer and specify the criteria for
determining correctness. Click the yellow Help
button for more details.
3. Click OK to close the Properties of Answer Field
dialog box.
All responses entered in answer fields will be
printed on student reports, even if you do not
specify correct answers.
When you generate a report for a student, using
the Reports feature of
Classroom Suite
, you will
have an opportunity to specify scoring options. Since
much of the text students will enter in a book report
will not have specific correct and incorrect answers,
you may wish to choose the Do Not Score option. You
may also wish to remove the check from Treat Answers
Left Blank As Wrong.
Finishing the Activity
1. When you have finished modifying questions and
adding answers, click the purple Finish Activity
button to save your work and make the activity
ready for your students.
2. When prompted, replace the previous version of
your book report by clicking the Replace button.
3. Finish Activity will remove all the extra toolbars
and make sure your work is saved as an Activity.
Congratulations! You have just completed a Book
Report activity for Little Red Riding Hood. You can
assign this to your students whenever you are ready.
In the next section of the tutorial, you will learn how to
use the My Book button to create a book report for any
book you like.

Part 3: Using the Book Report Grades 1–3 Template

You can create a Book Report Activity for any book
you like using the My Book toolbar. Select pictures
from the
Classroom Suite
Picture Library or use your
own photos or pictures as part of a Book Report
activity.
Creating a Custom Book Button
1. Open the Book Report Template (see page 4).
2. From the File menu, select Save As Activity. Save
your activity using a distinctive name, such as
Book Report Tortoise Hare.
3.
[Ctrl]+click
the My Book button at the bottom of
the toolbar of book titles at the right of the page.
The Button Properties dialog box displays.
4. Change the name of the Button from My Book to
Tortoise and the Hare. Click OK.
Adding Pictures
1. Click the new Tortoise and the Hare button. A
toolbar of eight blue Picture buttons display at the
bottom of the page.
2.
[Ctrl]+click
the first blue Picture button. The
Button Properties dialog box displays.
3. Click the Insert Picture From Library button. The
Picture Library dialog box displays.
4. From the Category drop down list, select the
Animals category and choose Tortoise. Click the
Insert button.
5. In the Button Name text box, replace the word
Picture with
Tortoise
. Click OK.
6. Repeat steps 2–5, placing pictures and names on
each of the Picture toolbar buttons (other
suggested pictures: Rabbit(fast), Rabbit 2,
Backgrounds category: Park).

Part 3: Customizing the Book Report Grades 1–3 Template
Adding Your Own Pictures
You may have photos or scanned images that you
want to provide for a specific book report. You can use
these pictures, rather than pictures from the Picture
Library.
1.
[Ctrl]+click
the first blue Picture button. The
Button Properties dialog box displays.
2. Click the Insert Picture From File button.
3. Navigate to a picture you wish to use that you
may have stored elsewhere on your computer, or
on another CD.
4. When you locate the picture you want, select it
and click OK. It will insert in the toolbar.
5. In the Button Name text box, replace the word
Picture with a name for the picture you have
added. Click OK to close the dialog box.
6. Repeat steps 1–5, placing pictures and names on
each of the Picture toolbar buttons.
Customizing Title and Questions
Proceed with the instructions on pages 4–6 of this
tutorial to customize the title page, modify questions,
and, if desired, specify answers for the new book
report.
Finishing the Activity
1. When you have finished modifying questions and
adding answers, click the purple Finish Activity
button to save your work and make the activity
ready for your students.
2. When prompted, replace the previous version of
your book report by clicking the Replace button.
3. Finish Activity will remove all the extra toolbars
and make sure your work is saved as an Activity.
Congratulations! You have just created a customized
book report. You can assign this activity to your
students whenever you are ready.
