Body: With 4.5mm (US 7) 60cm (24") circular needle, cast on 144 (160, 176, 192) sts. Work
in the round and in rib for 8 rounds as follows: P1 *K2, P2* repeat to last 3 sts of round, K2,
P1. Next round: Change to 5mm (US 8) 24" circular needles and place markers, dividing the
work into equal quarter sections as follows: *P11 (13, 15, 17), [K2, P2] 3 times, K2, P11 (13,
15, 17), place marker*. Work stitches between the markers from Graph One, beginning and
ending the graph according to your size. Place markers at the centre of the graph on the last
row for your size. Next round: Work sts as they appear (P all P sts and K all K sts) to within 5
sts of the first marker. Cast off 10 sts. Work to within 5 sts of the third marker and cast off 10
sts for armholes. The second and fourth marker will now indicate the centre back and centre
front of the upper part of the top.
Upper Back: Beginning with a wrong side row, work back and forth and follow Graph Two
for the back of the vest, shaping armholes and casting off for neck and shoulders according
to your size.
Upper Front: Work as given for Upper Back, following Graph Three for the front of the vest,
shaping armholes and casting off for neck and shoulders according to your size.
Finishing: Sew both shoulder seams. With a 3.5 (US E) crochet hook, beginning at the left
shoulder, work around the neck edge in Crab Stitch as follows: Insert hook into end stitch of
each row of neck shaping of the back of the vest as if to single crochet, put yarn over the
hook then draw yarn through both loops on the hook. Continue working down the back neck
shaping, inserting hook into the end stitch to the right of the last stitch worked until the back
neck cast off edge is reached. Make one Crab Stitch in each cast off stitch then into the end
stitch of each row of back neck shaping of the right side. Continue to work the front neck
edge in Crab Stitch in the same manner up to the left shoulder seam. Fasten off. Work around
the armholes in Crab Stitch, making one stitch in each end stitch of every row of the armhole
and in each cast off stitch of the armhole shaping. Fasten off.
