Peppy Lid
Materials:
1 skein of Manos del Uruguay Wool Clasica
Naturals, 100g
Needles:
4.5mm (US 7) single point and 5.5mm (US 9)
40cm (16") circular and double point or needle size to
give correct tension.
Tension:
16 sts = 4” on 5.5mm (US 9) needles.
Hat Band:
With scrap yarn and two 4.5mm (US 7)
needles, cast on 16 sts that will be undone after the
band is complete. Slipping the first stitch of every row,
Knit 2 rows, Purl 2 rows 36 times. Undo the cast on
edge and remove the scrap yarn while putting the
stitches on a needle. Break yarn leaving at least a 18”
tail. For a seamless hat band, with the right side facing,
graft the two ends together.
Grafting Instructions:
Thread a yarn darner with the
tail end of your work. With your two edges held
together and the points of both needles aligned and
the needles held parallel to each other, insert the
darner into the first stitch of the front needle as if to
purl. Draw the yarn through and leave the stitch on the
needle. Insert the yarn darner into the first stitch of
the back needle as if to knit. Draw the yarn through
and leave the stitch on the needle. Continue as
follows: *insert the darner into the first stitch of the
front needle as if to knit. Draw the yarn through and
let the stitch slip from the needle. Insert the yarn
darner into the second stitch of the front needle as if
to purl. Draw the yarn through and leave this stitch on
the needle. Now insert the darner into the first stitch
of the back needle as if to purl. Draw the yarn through
and let the stitch slip from the needle. Insert the yarn
darner into the second stitch of the back needle as if
to knit.
Draw the yarn through and leave this stitch on the
needle.* Return to the stitches of the front needle and
repeat between *’s until there are no sts remaining on
either needle. Weave in end and trim.
Hat Crown:
With 5.5mm (US 9) circular needle, pick
up 1 st for every slipped stitch along one edge of the
hat band. 72 sts. Continue by working in the round in
stocking stitch as follows:
1st Rnd: *Inc 1 st, K1* repeat to end of round. 108 sts.
Continue in rounds of stocking stitch until the hat
measures 6” from the hat band. Decrease the crown as
follows:
Rnd 1: *K2tog st, K1* repeat to end of round.
Rnd 2: Knit
Rnd 3: *K2tog*
Repeat the last 2 rounds once more. Break yarn and
thread through the remaining sts. Draw closed and
fasten off.
Picot edge:
With 4.5mm (US 7) needles, pick up and
knit 72 sts along the bottom edge of hat band. *Knit
into the next st and pull yarn through. With first st on
the right hand needle, knit and pull yarn through the
same st, 3 more times, creating a chain. Cast off 2 sts.*
Repeat until all sts are cast off.
