styles to choose from. How can you determine which is the best one?

Stand-alone or Attached

The first thing to think about is whether you want to get a lamp that attaches to the back of your desk

or a stand-alone lamp that sits on your desk. If you’re someone who wants good lighting for your whole

desktop, you’ll probably prefer to buy a lamp that attaches. Another good thing about attached lamps

is that they don’t use up space on the surface of the desk.

Stand-alone lamps are fine if you don’t need all of your desk top to be lit. They’re usually more

flexible and better-looking, and are better for mood lighting than attached lamps.

Adjustable Lamps

If you plan to use your desk for a number of purposes that have different lighting needs, you’ll

probably want to go with an adjustable lamp. Perhaps the most versatile type of adjustable lamp is the

swing arm lamp, where the base of the lamp stays stationary, while the upper part tilts or swings as

needed. But make sure the swing arm is stable enough for the lamp head to remain in whatever

position you set it in.

Swing arm lamps that employ a counterweighted system have the longest lifespan, by far, of any

system. The other types of systems will fail: springs will stretch, screws will crack, flexible arms will go

caput and hydraulics will spring a leak.

Dome lamps give off a pretty bright light and are contemporary, practical and stylish.

If you like a more traditional lamp, you could try a standard type of lamp with a lampshade. But make

sure it’s tall enough to illuminate as much of the desk as you need it to.

If you have a wooden desk and you like antiques, you might want to buy an old-fashioned banker’s

lamp or a Tiffany lamp.

If you’re interesting in making a fashion statement, you’ll want to check out accent lamps. If you’re

someone who likes to make fashion statements, accent lamps might appeal to you.

They usually turn out to be quite the conversation pieces.

If the lamp is for your kid’s room, you’ll need to be certain it’s safe and unbreakable. Incandescent

bulbs aren’t recommended, as their high heat are a fire hazard and can burn kids.

Bulb Types

Incandescent bulbs are cheap, but they have little else to offer. They consume too much power and

the quality of their light is just average.

LED bulbs last far longer than any other kind of bulb and they are also the most energy-friendly, but

they also cost more and their light is the worst for quality.

The best quality of light comes from full-spectrum fluorescent tubes that are run on direct-current

(DC). Unlike their AC counterparts, DC tubes don’t flicker. But the vast majority of people have

alternating current AC power, and flickering AC fluorescent lights can cause eyestrain and headaches

for many people.

For AC lighting, halogen bulbs yield the best quality of light. Halogen light is clear and sharp, and its

pure white light contrasts well to dark printing on a page.
