Energy Secretary confirms for major summit to discuss a fair energy deal for consumers

Policy Review Intelligence and The Independent newspaper have today announced the Fair Energy Summit, the summit is being held in response to the concerns of consumers and policy makers over the rising cost of energy and to discuss other issues regarding the service provided by energy suppliers.

The summit, taking place on the morning of Monday 17 December in Westminster, will be addressed byRt Hon Ed Davey MP the Secretary of State for Energy and Clim ate Changeand being supported by three major energy providers - British Gas, Co-operative Energy and E.ON.

Energy and in particular its cost (along with the profits of energy companies) continue to be an ongoing public policy concern. The average annual household bill for gas and electric has increased from approximately £500 in 2006, to over £1200 in 2011 - with many firms announcing fresh price rises in recent weeks. This has led to both policy makers and the regulator OFGEM announcing new measures.

The purpose of this timely roundtable summit will be to bring together high-profile policy makers, experts, consumer groups, industry leaders and providers for an informed policy discussion looking at what is needed to give consumers the confidence that they are paying a fair price for the energy that they use.

Confirmed contributors at the summit include: Phil Bentley, Managing Director of British Gas;Tony Cocker, Chief Executive of E.ON UK; Nigel Mason, Business Development Manager of Co-operative Energy; Alistair Buchanan, Chief Executive of OFGEM; Richard Lloyd, Executive Director, Which?; Tom Wright, Group CEO of Age UK; Reg Platt, Research Fellow at the IPPR think tank andHelen Berresford, UK Head of Campaigns at Save the C hildren.

The summit will look at practical non-legislative/voluntary measures and policies that the industry itself could implement to help customers, as well as look at further reforms that might be required to deliver a fairer deal for consumers.
