Energy Secretary confirms for major summit to discuss a fair energy deal for consumers
Policy Review Intelligence and The Independent newspaper have today announced the Fair Energy Summit, the summit is being held in response to the concerns of consumers and policy makers over the rising cost of energy and to discuss other issues regarding the service provided by energy suppliers.
The summit, taking place on the morning of Monday 17 December in Westminster, will be addressed byRt Hon Ed Davey MP the Secretary of State for Energy and Clim ate Changeand being supported by three major energy providers - British Gas, Co-operative Energy and E.ON.
Energy and in particular its cost (along with the profits of energy companies) continue to be an ongoing public policy concern. The average annual household bill for gas and electric has increased from approximately £500 in 2006, to over £1200 in 2011 - with many firms announcing fresh price rises in recent weeks. This has led to both policy makers and the regulator OFGEM announcing new measures.
The purpose of this timely roundtable summit will be to bring together high-profile policy makers, experts, consumer groups, industry leaders and providers for an informed policy discussion looking at what is needed to give consumers the confidence that they are paying a fair price for the energy that they use.
Confirmed contributors at the summit include: Phil Bentley, Managing Director of British Gas;Tony Cocker, Chief Executive of E.ON UK; Nigel Mason, Business Development Manager of Co-operative Energy; Alistair Buchanan, Chief Executive of OFGEM; Richard Lloyd, Executive Director, Which?; Tom Wright, Group CEO of Age UK; Reg Platt, Research Fellow at the IPPR think tank andHelen Berresford, UK Head of Campaigns at Save the C hildren.
The summit will look at practical non-legislative/voluntary measures and policies that the industry itself could implement to help customers, as well as look at further reforms that might be required to deliver a fairer deal for consumers.
Independent readers will be able to watch the summit broadcast live from 10:00 on Monday17 December 2012and be able to send in your points and comments interactively at: http://www.policyreview.co.uk/fair-energy-summit-2012/
Gavin Hayes, Editorial Director at Policy Review Intelligence said:"It's understandable that energy continues to be a major public policy and consumer concern - not least given its rising cost; we need an informed dialogue with all the key stakeholders to come up with practical solutions to help ensure that consumers are getting a fair energy deal, that's what this summit hopes to achieve."
Phil Bentley, Managing Director of British Gas said:"We're doing all we can to help already stretched households keep their energy bills down. Rising prices don't have to mean rising bills if we embrace energy efficiency. And consumers want to know that the price they pay is fair and the best deal available - that's why we're supporting the 'Fair Energy Summit'."
Nigel Mason, Business Development Manager of Co-operative Energy said:"Co-operative Energy is pleased to have the chance to debate with the Secretary of State and the big energy suppliers the deep reforms that are needed across the energy supply industry to regain the trust of consumers."
Tony Cocker, Chief Executive of E.ONUKsaid:"As our own Reset Review has shown, if you engage properly with your customers, listen and make the changes they want, then you can begin to re-earn their trust. Already we are seeing a positive reaction to the changes we have made. Although there is still a long way to go, our simpler, easily compared tariffs are giving families confidence that they are on the best deal for them. We want customers to be confident that they are paying a fair price for the energy they use. And we want to help them keep their spending down too. We are asking our customers to check they are on the right tariff, check their homes are as energy efficient as possible, and then if they need help in paying their bills, let us check if there are benefits we can help them claim. We all need to work together to make a real and positive difference to Britain's energy experience."
