The stories have been very fully annotated, and nothing that seemed to offer any real difficulty has been passed over. All proper names have been explained, with the exception of a few too well known or too insignificant to justify comment. The notes are further renforced by an _Idiomatic Commentary_, to be studied in connection with the text. By frequent reviews and by oral drill in translating the idioms from either language to the other, with changes of person, tense, etc., wherever possible, the Commentary should enable the student to attain to a realmastery of the idioms that are here tabulated. Easy exercises for translation into Spanish are added. They are based on very short passages from the text, and are so graded and arranged as to afford a systematic review of the elements of grammar, a drill which beginners always need. The vocabulary, while registering all the words in the text, except such as are nearly or quite identical, does not aim at giving, without any labor of adaptation on the part of the student, the precise equivalent required. The stories are complete, except for a few trifling omissions dictated by class-room proprieties. Excuso aadir que semejante pretensin excit sucesivamente la resistencia del centinela, las risas de los ordenanzas 10 y las dudas y vacilaciones de los _edecanes_[1-4] antes de llegar a conocimiento del Excelentsimo Sr. D.[1-5] Eugenio Portocarrero, conde del Montijo, a la sazn Capitn general del antiguo reino de Granada.... Pero como aquel prcer era hombre de muy buen humor y tena muchas noticias de Heredia, clebre 15 por sus chistes, por sus cambalaches y por su amor a lo ajeno..., con permiso del engaado dueo, di orden de que dejasen pasar al gitano. Penetr ste en el despacho de Su Excelencia, dando dos pasos adelante y uno atrs, que era como andaba en las 20 circunstancias graves, y ponindose de rodillas exclam: --Viva Mara Santsima y viva su merced, que es el amo de toitico[1-6] el mundo! --Levntate; djate de zalameras, y dime qu se te ofrece ...--respondi el Conde con aparente sequedad. (p2) Heredia se puso tambin serio, y dijo con mucho desparpajo: --Pues, seor, vengo a que[2-1] se me den los mil reales. --Qu mil reales? 05 --Los ofrecidos hace das, en un bando, al que presente las seas de _Parrn_. --Pues qu! t lo _conocas_? --No, seor. --Entonces.... 10 --Pero ya lo conozco. --Cmo! --Es muy sencillo. Lo he buscado; lo he visto; traigo las seas, y pido mi ganancia. --Ests seguro de que lo has visto?--exclam el Capitn15 general con un inters que se sobrepuso a sus dudas. El gitano se ech a rer, y respondi: --Es claro! Su merced dir: este gitano es como todos, y quiere engaarme.--No me perdone Dios si miento!--Ayer v a _Parrn_. 20 --Pero sabes t la importancia de lo que dices? Sabes que hace tres aos que se persigue[2-2] a ese monstruo, a ese bandido sanguinario, _que nadie conoce ni ha podido nunca ver_? Sabes que todos los das roba, en distintos puntos de estas sierras, a algunos pasajeros; y despus los asesina, pues dice 25 que los muertos no hablan, y que se es el nico medio de que nunca d con l la Justicia? Sabes, en fin, que ver a _Parrn_ es encontrarse con la muerte? El gitano se volvi a rer,[2-3] y dijo: --Y no sabe su merced que lo que no puede hacer un 30 gitano no hay quien lo haga[2-4] sobre la tierra? Conoce nadie[2-5] cundo es verdad nuestra risa o nuestro llanto? Tiene su merced noticia de alguna zorra que sepa tantas picardas como nosotros?--Repito, mi General, que, no slo he visto a _Parrn_, sino que he hablado con l. (p3) --Dnde? --En el camino de Tzar. --Dame pruebas de ello. --Escuche su merced. Ayer maana hizo ocho das que 05 camos mi borrico y yo en poder de unos ladrones. Me maniataron muy bien, y me llevaron por unos barrancos endemoniados hasta dar con una plazoleta donde acampaban los bandidos. Una cruel sospecha me tena desazonado.--Ser esta gente de _Parrn_? (me deca a cada instante.) Entonces 10 no hay remedio, me matan[3-1]!..., pues ese maldito se ha empeado en que ningunos ojos que vean su fisonoma vuelvan a ver cosa ninguna. Estaba yo haciendo estas reflexiones, cuando se me present un hombre vestido de macareno[3-2] con mucho lujo, y dndome 15 un golpecito en el hombro y sonrindose con suma gracia, me dijo: --Compadre, yo soy _Parrn_! Or esto y caerme de espaldas,[3-3] todo fu una misma cosa. El bandido se ech a rer. 20 Yo me levant desencajado, me puse de rodillas, y exclam en todos los tonos de voz que pude inventar: --Bendita sea tu alma, rey de los hombres!... Quin no haba de conocerte[3-4] por ese porte de prncipe real que Dios te ha dado? Y que haya madre[3-5] que para tales hijos! 25 Jess![3-6] Deja que te d un abrazo, hijo mo! Que en mal hora muera[3-6] si no tena gana de encontrarte el gitanico para decirte la buenaventura[3-7] y darte un beso en esa mano de emperador!--Tambin yo soy de los tuyos! Quieres que te ensee a cambiar burros muertos por burros vivos?--Quieres 30 vender como potros tus caballos viejos? Quieres que le ensee el francs a una mula? El Conde del Montijo no pudo contener la risa....--Luego pregunt: --Y qu respondi _Parrn_ a todo eso? Qu hizo? (p4) --Lo mismo que su merced; rerse a todo trapo.[4-1] --Y t? --Yo, seorico, me rea tambin; pero me corran por las patillas lagrimones como naranjas. 05 --Contina. En seguida me alarg la mano y me dijo: --Compadre, es V. el nico hombre de talento que ha cado en mi poder. Todos los dems tienen la maldita costumbre de procurar entristecerme, de llorar, de quejarse y de hacer otras 10 tonteras que me ponen de mal humor. Slo V. me ha hecho rer: y si no fuera por esas lgrimas.... --Qu, seor, si son[4-2] de alegra! --Lo creo. Bien sabe el demonio que es la primera vez que me he redo desde hace seis u ocho aos!--Verdad es que 15 tampoco he llorado.... --Pero despachemos.--Eh, muchachos! Decir _Parrn_ estas palabras y rodearme una nube de trabucos, todo fu un abrir y cerrar de ojos. --Jess me ampare!--empec a gritar. 20 --Deteneos! (exclam _Parrn_.) No se trata de eso _todava_.--Os llamo para preguntaros qu le habis _tomado_ a este hombre.[4-3] --Un burro en pelo.[4-4] --Y dinero? 25 --Tres duros y siete reales. --Pues dejadnos solos. Todos se alejaron. --Ahora dime la buenaventura--exclam el ladrn, tendindome la mano.[4-5] 30 Yo se la[4-6] cog; medit un momento; conoc que estaba en el caso de hablar formalmente, y le dije con todas las veras[4-7] de mi alma: --_Parrn_, tarde que temprano,[4-8] ya me[4-9] quites la vida, ya me la dejes..., morirs ahorcado! (p5) --Eso ya lo saba yo.... (respondi el bandido con entera tranquilidad.)--Dime _cundo_. Me puse a cavilar. Este hombre (p
