Bed sheets from bamboo? Is this a joke?

When I first found out about bamboo sheets from my neighbor, I was sure she was trying to bamboozle

me. But then one night I slept in some, and afterward I knew I’d never be contented in anything else.

Bamboo is fabulous stuff. Due to a special rhizome-dependent system, bamboo can grow up to a meter

a day in the right climatical and soil conditions and can grow to thirty meters high. There are types of

bamboo that can, in as little as four months, reach their full size. It grows in cold mountains or in the

tropics. The Indian government is currently debating whether to classify bamboo as a tree or as a

variety of grass. Certain varieties of bamboo only send out flowers once every 100 years or so (I think

my husband must belong to one of those species).

From a number of standpoints, bamboo sheets are awesome. In the world of fashion, environment

friendly fabrics are sexy right now, and bamboo sheets definitely fit the bill. As rapidly as bamboo

grows, it might be the world’s most maintainable and renewable resource, as well as one of the most

profuse. In its natural environment, it thrives without pesticides, herbicide's or irrigation. After it’s

harvested, it sends up new shoots, so it doesn’t need to be replanted. Other commercial trees have a

harvesting cycle of 25-75 years, but bamboo can be harvested after only 4-5 years.

Bamboo produces at least 30% more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees, while drawing cO2 from

the air. It has an amazing ability to absorb nutrients from wastewater, raising the possibility of

eventually being utilized to help break sewage down.

Few, if any, animals are slaughtered or displaced in the harvesting and production of bamboo. Though

bamboo constitutes 99% of a panda bear’s diet, pandas don’t eat the type of bamboo used for making

sheets. Bamboo sheets are hypoallergenic, antibacterial and bio-degradable.

Bamboo’s main weakness from an ecological standpoint is that, at present, in order to produce the

remarkably soft bamboo material used for sheets, the wood pulp must be broken down by caustic soda

(sodium hydroxide).

in the world. And my bamboo sheets also make my stuffed panda bear feel right at home.
