    Facilities     Davis   Hall   work   continues,   and   we   anticipate   the   completion   of   the   building   by   September   1,   2011.   The   project   is   on   budget   and   on   time.    The   anticipated   move‐in   time   for   CSE,   EE,   CEDAR/CUBS   and   the   Deans   Development   staff   will   start   in   mid‐October.     Repurposing   of   SEAS   space:   SEAS   department   chairs   and   the   dean   have   been   meeting   with   representatives   from   the   UB   Capital   Planning   Group   to   discuss   plans   to   address   department   needs   within   SEAS   units   as   space   becomes   available   when   EE   and   CSE   move   into   Davis   Hall.        414   Bonner   Hall‐National   Grid   Conference   Room   upgrade:   the   design   has   been   completed   to   upgrade   the   414   Bonner   Hall   Conference   room   to   a   cutting‐edge   access   grid   facility   using   a   video   teleconferencing   system   that   will   facilitate   virtual   partnerships   with   Biomedical   Engineering.    Work   began   this   summer,   with   a   completion   date   of   late   August.     Space   Needs   Report      A   framework   was   devised   to   assess   the   Schools   space      existing   square   footage   in   engineering   buildings   and   non‐engineering   structures,   new   ft 2   from   Davis   Hall,   space   lost,   project   space   needs   based   on   near‐future   growth.    A   discussion   will   take   place   during   next   academic   year.

Annual Report 10 11, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences August   28,   2011       Philanthropy     A   school   highlight   during   AY   10   11   was   the   very   generous   philanthropic   response   of   alumni,   friends,   and   corporations   to   school   needs.     Leading   the   way   was   alumnus   Jack   Davis   gift   to   name   our   new   building   Barbara   and   Jack   Davis   Hall.    Deans   Advisory   Council   member   and   alumnus   John   Pilitsis,   alumnus   Michael   Salvadore,   and   Keller   Technology   Corp.   also   gave   major   new   building   gifts   during   the   time   period.     Our   scholarships   grew   during   the   year   with   generous   gifts   from   alumna   Victoria   Bringhurst‐Levy,   the   family   of   alumnus   Yong   Ho   Lee   (d.),   and   Bruce   and   Lisa   Shames   in   memorial   to   their   father   Distinguished   Professor   Emeritus   Irving   shames.     Corporations   giving   major   gifts   to   us   were   Applied   Sciences   Group,   Google,   and   St.   Jude   Medical,   Inc.

  Associate   Dean   for   Research:   7/09      7/11   ( Stella   N.   Batalama,   July   20,   2011)   During   the   past   two   years   my   activities   as   Associate   Dean   for   Research   included   regular   interaction   with   the   Dean,   SEAS   Chairs,   SEAS   Development   Office,   FIRM,   OVPR/VPR,   SPS,   and   SEAS   individual   faculty.    Specific   activities   can   be   grouped   in   five   categories   as   outlined   below.     General   SEAS   Research   Activities   •   Organized   with   SEAS   Dean   two   state‐wide   workshops   on   Info   Tech   to   create   a   new   res   partnership   (I‐90   Res   Corridor   for   Info   Related   Disciplines)   among   several   major   NY   universities,   fed   res   labs,   and   pertinent   industry.   •   Assembled   UB   Faculty   contribution   to   the   above   workshops,   wrote   report,   &   prepared   keynote   presentation.   •   Facilitated/contributed   to   the   submission   of   a   SEAS   proposal   for   the   establish   of   a   SEAS   Ctr.   on   Distributed   Comm.   and   Cloud   Computing   submitted   to   AFRL   (proposal   reached   the   top   4   out   of   about   24   proposals   )   •   Assisted   the   Dean   in   the   preparation   of    a   SEAS   Student   Quality   Assurance   Plan   submitted   to   the   Provost     •   Established   the   SEAS   Res   Advisory   Committee   &   created   electronic   forms   for   faculty   apps   to   res   initiatives.    •   Worked   w/   SEAS   Dept.   Chairs   to   establish   3‐4   areas   of   major   res   activities   per   Dept.   &   determine   Res   Area   Coordinators   &   the   Development   Office   and/or   OVPR   to   help   establish   res   relationships   w/   industry/consortia.    •   Alerted   faculty   about   funding   opportunities   &   contacted   res   related   SEAS   faculty   surveys

Annual Report 10 11, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences August   28,   2011     •   Worked   w/    FIRM   for   the   generation   of   faculty   evaluation   metrics   and   discussed   data   with   Chairs    •   Worked   with   SEAS   website   developer   &   helped   in   the   coordination   of   SEAS   res   news   for   the   UB   Eng.   Magazine   •   Negotiated   with   Chairs/made   SEAS   decisions   on   tuition   &   established   electronic   filing   of   SEAS   tuition   fund   commitments   to   faculty   proposals   when   required   by   sponsors.   •   Assist    the    Assoc.   Dean   for   Res   &   Grad   transition   of   responsibilities    &   introduced   him   to   SPS   &   SEAS      Research   Initiatives   •   Introduced   SEAS   Res   Initiatives:   e.g.   SEAS   seed   funding   for   area   res   activities   ($5K   per   year   per   area   per   Dept.)   •   Proposed   to   SEAS   Admin.   Council   reduced   teaching   load   for   Asst.   Professors   until   tenure    •   Worked   with   Res   Area   Coordinators   &   review/approve   faculty   applications/requests   related   to   res   initiatives    •   Coordinate   w/   FIRM   reimbursements   related   to   res   initiatives     SPS   Interaction   •   Contributed   to   the   improvement   of   SPS   processes   &   regulations   and   their   interaction   w/   SEAS   faculty   through   continuous   discussions   w/   SPS   &   faculty.    •   Established   monthly   SPS   Office   Hours/meetings   in   SEAS   where   the   Assoc.   Dean   for   Research,   SEAS   faculty   &   staff   have   the   opportunity   to   discuss   w/   SPS   representatives   matters   of   mutual   interest;   requested   that   these   matters   be   communicated   to   SPS   staff   not   present   in   the   discussion   •   Assisted   faculty   on   an   individual   basis   w/   matters   involving   SPS   procedures    &    interaction   with   SPS   staff   •   Wrote   a   memo   to   SPS   to   expedite   the   proposal   approval   process   for   time   critical   submissions   even   without   SEAS   approval   SEAS   reserves   the   right   to   withdraw   the   proposal   if   certain   School   requirements   are   not   met.   •   Initiated   the   establishment   of   SPS   early   reminders   to   faculty   about   ending   accounts   as   part   of   SPS   assistance   to   faculty   to   fiscally   manage   their   grants.    •   Discussed   extensively   with   SPS   and   requested   SPS   to:   Offer   options   to   SEAS   faculty   when   complicated   matters   arise;   have   the   ability   to   provide   up‐to‐date   acct   balance   on   grants;   create   a   reporting   system   where   all   co‐PIs   &   PIs   are   listed   in   sponsored   res   related   databases;   maintain   high   quality   customer   service.     Work   with   the   Office   of   VPR   •   Participated   in   regular   meetings   called   by   the   VPR;    limited   submission   proposal   evaluation   committees   formed   by   the   Office   of   VPR;    five‐member   recruiting   committee   for   the   Assistant   Vice   President   for   SPS.   •   Alerted   faculty   about   limited   submission   proposal   solicitations     Regular   meeting   activities   •   Monthly   Research   Advisory   Committee,   SPS   office   hours   at   SEAS,   &   Deans   Admin   Council   meetings   •   Deans   Advisory   Council   meeting   (twice   a   year)

Annual Report 10 11, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences August   28,   2011     Associate   Dean   for   Graduate   Education   Highlights:   7/1/2010‐6/30/2011      Staffing   changes     •   Associate   Dean   for   Graduate   Education   Dr.   Rajan   Batta   was   appointed   SEAS   Acting   Dean   on   April   25,   2011.    •   Paschalis   Alexandridis   assumed   the   duties   of   Acting   Associate   Dean   for   Graduate   Education   on   May   8,   2011.   •   Directors   of   Graduate   Study:   BME,   A.   Titus;CBE,   P.   Alexandridis(till   5/11),   M.   Swihart(after   5/11);   CSEE,   G.   Mosqueda;   CSE,   J.   Chomicki;   EE,   W.   Anderson;   ISE,   V.   Paquet;MAE,   S.   Hua(till   1/1/11),   G.   Dargush(1/1/11‐1/31/11),   J.   Crassidis   (after   2/1/11)   •   Michelle   Chasse   was   hired   as   a   staff   member   &   five   graduate   assistants   were   hired   to   support   the   GradVote   project.     Major   activities:   Target   Your   Teaching   (The   Learning   Center)   workshop   for   2010   FFW   attendees‐ 8/20/10;   Luncheon   with   GSA   representatives   from   SEAS   depts.‐9/1/10;   Bflo   Harbor   Cruise   for   incoming   SEAS   grad   students‐9/18/10;   SPEAK   Workshop   (Keith   Otto)   for   incoming   SEAS   Teaching   Assts‐10/22/10;   Grad   Staff   Lunch   at   Taste   of   India‐12/14/10;   End‐of‐semester   Grad   APC   Luncheon   at   Byblos‐12/16/10;   Virtual   Career   Fair   for   SEAS   grad   students‐3/1/11;   Global   Career   Fair   for   SEAS   grad   students‐3/4/11;   Scholarship   Reception   (Holiday   Inn,   NFB)‐3/25/11;   Poster   Competition   with   participation   of   2   posters   per   SEAS   dept.   3/30/11;   Poster   Competition   Lunch   and   Awards   Ceremony‐4/6/11;   End‐of‐year   Grad   APC   Luncheon‐4/26/11;   Future   Faculty   Workshop   for   senior   PhD   students   interested   in   academia‐5/16/11.     The   Graduate   Academic   Programs   Committee   met   regularly   throughout   the   academic   year.     The   Graduate   Student   Quality   of   Life   initiatives   planned   in   academic   year   2009‐2010   have   all   been   successfully   implemented   during   2010‐2011.    For   more   information,   please   refer   to:   http://www.eng.buffalo.edu/ge/qualityoflifeinitiatives/     Major   new   initiatives     •   The   proposal   for   the   new   Masters   and   PhD   degrees   in   Biomedical   Engineering   has   been   discussed   extensively,   approved   at   the   SEAS   level,   and   forwarded   to   the   Graduate   School.   •   Distance   Learning:   stricter   guidelines,   putting   guidelines   on   all   department   websites,   adding   the   word   Distance   to   distance   courses   on   transcripts   •   A   new   proposal   for   Presidential   Fellows   has   been   submitted   to   the   Graduate   School      as   a   result   SEAS   will   be   getting   6   fellowships   in   the   2011‐2012   academic   year   (instead   of   the   current   4)   but   there   will   be   cost‐sharing   involved.   •   The   Global   Graduate   Career   Fair   has   held   for   the   first   time   in   spring   2011   with   great   SEAS   graduate   student   participation.        Associate   Dean   Undergraduate   Education:   2010‐2011     1.    Staffing   Changes   •   Jo   Meachem   on   loan   to   Civil   Engineering   to   assist   with   graduate   admissions   •   Jane   Sinclair   on   loan   to   HUB   project,   returns   6/30/11   •   Sabrina   Casucci   hired   to   help   fill   the   void   with   Jane   Sinclair   out.    Ends   service   on   6/30/11
