How Do Solar Lights Work
In my yard I have a lot of different
Solar lights
, Some were so cute they twinkled in the night.
Some marked the pathways through the yard, I even had them on the privacy fence. Most all of
them come with On/Off switch. I lost power one night and brought in a few Solar lights and I
wasn't in the dark anymore. This had me wondering how they were made. So I read up on
them, this is what I found out.
Each light has 4 parts Lamp 1. cover(at
the bottom ) 2.Then LED light, controller
board, NI- CAD battery(rechargeable)
3.Photo
resistor,
Solar
Cell,
4.Glass
cover. The Solar Cell is what gathers the
energy then sends it to the Battery for
storing. All Solar cells stop producing
power when evening comes. It is stored
in the NI-CAD Battery until the photo
resistor( it is a window to say its dark)
says it's night and now needs the light
bulb to come on. The most volts a single
cell holds is 1.2 volts, it depends on how
much Sun it gets as to how long the light
last, in the winter with less hours of
sunlight and the light doesn't last more
them 8 hours. The Solar cell is wired through a DIODE straight to the battery. The DIODE stops
the current from flowing back out of the solar cell.
One 1.2 volt can store up to 700 milli amp-hours. The Photo resistor turns the LED light on
when it gets dark. It produces half the light a candle would have. These little bulbs if they have
a lot of Sun to store can last up to 15 hours but most go for 10 to 12 hours. Solar Lights are still
expensive because the solar cells are made from Silicon Crystals in a clean room, which make it
costly. I have found different types of solars for a fair price.
Some
Solar Lighting
may have a small Halogen Bulb and LED bulb, also found in flashlights. The
ones with both light bulbs are more expensive and come with a motion detector and come on
for a minute when someone passes the light. These are the best ones to have as they serve as a
nite light. Have them following your pathways and your Gardens at night. Patios look great with
these little lights to glow bright. They come in all sorts of styles.
