Tutorial #1 T..O..C..AdrcA bobeoat PDF Navigation Methods
Navigating within an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File, or PDF for short, is similar in concept to turning pages of a book and in many cases works just like a World Wide Web Browser.
There are many ways to move between pages in a PDF document.
The first navigation method is found in the browse buttons at the top of the screen.
The single arrow moves forward or backward— page by page in linear fashion.
The arrow pointing towards the vertical line will either move to the last or first page in a document.
The double arrows move back or forth to previous pages viewed in a document. The double arrows differ from the single arrow in that they move backward or forward depending on pages already viewed. It is best to use the double arrows when navigating a complex document which will allow the entire reading process to be retraced.
The second navigation method is in the scroll bar found at the right of the screen. To move backward or forward in a document click on either the up or down arrows located on each end of the scroll bar.
A third way to navigate is to click and hold the mouse on the scroll box and drag it appropriately — a dialog box appears indicating to which page the reader will jump when released.

The final navigation method is to use the page number dialog box located in the bottom left of the screen.
While the current location is displayed in this area it may also be used to manually enter the page number to be viewed.
Click once on the box and a dialog box will appear in the center of the screen, enter the page to be viewed and click OK.
The PDF will now be on the desired page.

Adobe Acrobat PDF Linking Features
Linking within an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File, or PDF for short, allows the user to jump to a particular section of the content without having to turn pages one by one.
PDF linking features are very similar in concept and implementation as that of HyperText linking, found on the Internet while using a World Wide Web Browser.
The Michigan Curriculum Framework documents contain two types of links.
The first is called an Internal Link.
While in the browser mode — the hand tool — use the mouse to pass over an area of text. Note that when an active link is present, the hand turns to a pointing finger.
Click once on the active link to view selected material.
Click on the double arrows in the navigation bar to return to the point from which a choice was made.
Within the Michigan Curriculum Framework documents, all links are indicated in blue. The links usually are text, but numbers and graphics may also link to a particular source.

The second type of link in these documents is an external link.
Use the mouse to pass over an area of text. Note that when an active link is present, the hand turns to a pointing finger — which includes the letter “W.” Click once to view the intended resources.
A second application will be launched by the PDF reader, in this case a World Wide Web Browser.
All external links require active connection to the Internet, as well as a properly installed web browser.
To return to the PDF file, it is necessary to select, or bring to the front, the Adobe Reader application.
In most cases, external links contained in the Michigan Curriculum Framework PDF files will be indicated as blue underlined text.

Searching for a keyword term within an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File, or PDF for short, allows the user to quickly locate specific content.
To perform a keyword search within a single pdf file, click on the black binoculars icon.
In the dialog box that appears type the term you wish to search for, and click find.
If the keyword is found in this document it will be highlighted and displayed.
To find the next occurrence of the term in the same document, select the black binoculars a second time. Note the option to “ find again” is available.
Options to “Match Whole Word Only,” “Match Case,” or “Find Backwards” will narrow and make a search for a key term more specific.
It is also possible to use the tools menu and select “find again”.
In the case that the keyword does not appear anywhere in the document a message will appear indicating so.

AdobeAcrobat Multiple PDF Search
Searching for a keyword term, within multiple pdf documents is possible from within the Michigan Curriculum Framework pdf file.
The difference betweenan index of all pdf fileslooking for a single term and searching is in the tool selected from the PDF navigation bar.
To look for a specific term which may be contained in any one of several pdf files on this CD-ROM, click once on the black binoculars containing a page in the background.
A “search” box appears, which allows for designation of a search term.
Type the word “patterns” and click once on “search.”
A box titles “search results” appears, and indicates, in weighted fashion documents which match the indicated term.
Weighted response means the

Double-clicking on a document’s icon, will cause the document to open and jump to the first occurrence of the term, patterns..
From the pdf navigation bar, click once on the “next in document” icon, and the next page, in sequence, where the term occurs is displayed.
Selecting the “previous in document” icon will return to the first occurrence of the term.
From the navigation bar, select the document icon with the “weighted pie chart.” This will display original search results, allowing the user to jump to another file which contains the same results.
Select, once again the black binoculars containing a page in the background.
Qualify the term “patterns” by adding the terms “and geometry.”
When the “search button” is clicked, the documents containing the most occurrences of the combined term appear at the top of the list.
