Ch. Walter, Saints of Second Iconoclasm in the Madrid Scylitzes. — Four cycles, illustrating the persecution of the Iconodules, figure in the Madrid Scylitzes. Their iconographical sources are examined with reference to the passages of the text which they accompany. Internal evidence suggests that three cycles were executed specifically for the original manuscript of which the Madrid Scylitzes is a copy. Only for Lazarus the icon-painter is it possible that an independent cycle was available. The miniatures cannot be cited in support of a tradition of chronicle illustration.
