The results presented here were obtained using a range of approaches, from the empirical investigation of a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker population, analysis of raw data and the development and analysis of a simulation model. The thesis consists of four major chapters that can be read independently, since the single chapters focus on specific aims, each one showing an autonomous contribution into ecological research.
