Pliny's strychnos.
Pliny's strychnos, as well as that of Theophrastos and Dioscorides, is not the same as the present genus Strychnos. Nowadays the genus Strychnos indicates plants which belong to the Loganiacea family, but in the works of ancient authors the plants concerned belonged to the Solanacea family. According to Pliny's descriptions it is possible to recognize, under the term strychnos, wintercherry, black nightsade, thornapple, deadly nightshade and perhaps mandrake and Physalis somnifera. Some confusion does remain possible for species which do not belong to the Solanacea family or are simply fictitious plants.
Die Strychnos bei Plinius.
Die Strychnos bei Plinius so wie bei Theophrastos und Dioscorides stimmen nicht mehr überein mit der jetzigen Gattung Strychnos. Jetzt bezeichnet die Gattung Strychnos Pflanzen, die zur Familie der Loganiaceae gehören, aber im Altertum handelte es sich um Pflanzen, die zu der Familie der Solanaceae gehörten. Bei Plinius unter der Bezeichnung Strychnos kann man die gemeine Schlutte, den schwarzen Nachtschatten, den Stechapfel, die Tollkirsche und vielleicht dazu den Alraun und die Physalis somnifera erkennen. Jedoch verschiedene Verwechslungen betreffend Spezies, die nicht zur Familie der Solanaceae oder zur reinen Phantasie gehören, bleiben möglich.
