MEDIA KIT – AC&T SPORT CONSULTING Women betray their fitness club membership more than men According to the studyEXERCISE CONTINUATION AND DISCONTINUATION WITHIN SWISS FITNESS CLUBS, men resign their fitness membership much less than women and so do grownups less than youngsters.STUDY AUTHOR : Dr. Mattia Piffaretti, Université de Genève, Institut des Sciences du Sport et du Mouvement FUNDING : Commission Fédérale du Sport, Bureau du Sport de Macolin YEAR : 2007 Introduction : the first study of this kind in Switzerland In today’s western society, more and more people are sedentary. This lifestyle is related with many health problems. Despite the urgency of the situation, no study has focused on the role of fitness clubs in promoting longterm physical activity, a factor that is believed to enhance public health. Goal of the study To test the international figures that show that close to 50% of fitness clients give up their membership 6 months after their subscription. The last study to date is Janet Buckworth and Rod K. Dishman’s (2002)“Interventions to change physical activity behaviour”, in “Exercise Psychology” (Human Kinetics Editions). Moreover, this study aims to gather information about clients who want to either continue or discontinue a fitness programme and to give tips to fitness managers and staff on how to increase chances for a client to continue exercising within a fitness club. Study results a) 5 clients typologies A client at the precontemplation stage of physical exercise 2.7% This type of client is not interested in exercising, but does it under external circumstances A client at the contemplation stage of physical exercise 18% This type of client realises the benefits of physical activity, but does not find the opportunity to do it, apart from when he/she is forced to do it A client at the preparation stage of physical exercise25%This type of client exercises in an irregular and inconsistent way, often relapsing in the contemplation phase. A client at the action stage of physical exercise7.8%This type of client has practiced physical exercise in a regular way, but only for a short period of time(less than six months) A client at the maintenance stage of physical exercise 46% This type of client has practiced physical exercise regularly for a long period of time (more than six months)
Paradox At subscription time, 50% of the clients have a profile that could be define at risk in terms of dropout. But actually, after half a year only 25% turn out to withdraw from exercising. That means that 75% of the fitness clients continue to visit the fitness club. Adolescents (1725 yearsolds) drop out more frequently than adults after a 6 months programme. The « easyquitter profile » after 6 months Typically, the client who is more at risk is a woman who comes to the fitness club with hardly quantifiable objectives, such as : to look better, lose weight, get to know people, and so on. This type of client tends to be a smoker who does not have a very high selfesteem of his/her physical skills. He/she has not been doing physical activities for more than 6 months, and sometimes even since the schooldays. He/she does not tend to come to the club on his/her own will.

Here are the top 7 reasons : 1. Desire to do something else 2. Lack of time 3. Excessive costs 4. Personal problems 5. Major events disrupting the daily routine 6. Health problems or injury 7. Changing activity in summer time. The « hanginginthere profile » after 6 months Typically, this type of client is a man who set himself measurable goals: to increase his physical strength, to enhance his muscular mass. He is a whitecollar, who is satisfied with his/her job. By the way, exercising is part of his/her personal balance. This client comes to the club with his/her family’s support, and, most of all, on a self determined basis.
Continuation Reasons (Top 7) 1. Perceiving to be in better shape 2. Perceiving to be in good health 3.Love for the physical activity 4.Pleasure to go to the fitness club 5. Stress reduction 6.Easy access to the club 7. Quality of fitness facilities The fitness staff The study shows that the fitness personnel generally has a highstanding training level. Nevertheless, by insisting on a specific educational programme concerning the 5 clients profiles, it would be possible to lower the clients’ dropout rate six months after their subscription.
