DATE Wednesday, November 3, 2010 Sydney West Area Health Service Surgery Bookings    Heather Gray, Chief Executive of Sydney West Area Health Services (SWAHS), today announced that an external review into Waiting List Management at Sydney West has been completed and released to staff.   Key recommendations contained in the report are that SWAHS takes action to manage waiting lists more efficiently by fully complying with NSW Health’s Statewide Waiting List management policy.  The report also recommended that SWAHS investigate work practices that contributed to non‐compliance with waiting list policy.    “This report is a critical step in delivering real improvements in the way Sydney West Area Health Service looks after patients who are on surgery waiting lists,” Ms Gray said.   “Prior to receiving this report, SWAHS had already implemented improvements to the way in which patient access to surgery is managed.  The report is confirmation that we were right to review our procedures and introduce change for the better.”  In the three months from July 1 to September 30 this year, hospitals throughout SWAHS  provided 6473 planned surgery procedures with 81 percent provided within recommended clinical timeframes.  As a result of the actions taken SWAHS has provided 23 percent more surgery this year than last year.    The biggest change has seen a centralised management system replaced by local control at hospital level.  Now ...
