Jean Fremigacci (Université de Madagascar) mempergunakan arsip-arsip untuk menuliskan kembali kericuhan yang terjadi di daerah Betsileo pada tahun 1900-1923 antara para pandai besi dan kaum penjajah Perancis. Penjajah tersebut ingin mengambil laba pekerjaan para pandai besi itu. Peranan yang tidak menentu dari pihak pemerintah jajahan yang kadang- kadang memihak para pribumi, kadang-kadang pihak orang- orang Perancis, disini diterangkan tahap demi tahap. Selama masa itu bukanlah suatu kapitalisme keuangan bukan pula perdagangan yang menanamkan kekuasaannya di Madagaskar, melainkan suatu sistim pra-kapitalisme yang mengutamakan pelaksanaan dominasi dan penjajahan.
4. Jean Fremigacci (University of Madagascar) establishes, with, the aid of documents from the archives, the details of the conflict which occurred in Betsileo between 1900 and 1923 : the protagonists were the traditional blacksmiths, and French settlers who were bent on securing the profits from the production of the former. The ambivalent role of the French administration, siding with the natives and with the settlers in turn, is described step by step. Throughout the period under consideration it was neither a financial nor mercantile capitalism which established the ascendancy in Madagascar, but a precapitalist system which gave priority to the exercise of power and to keeping a hold on the people.
