PREFACE
The Foundation initiated in early 1993 a project on 'Innovations for the Improvement of the
Urban Environment'. The objectives of the project are: to highlight innovative visions,
practices and actions which will help achieve urban sustainability; to pull together
information on exemplary approaches containing elements of innovative policy; and to help
mobilize the social partners and others to achieve the sustainable city of the twenty-first
century.
The first phase of the project included an overview of innovative projects conducive to urban
sustainability. A European network of young planners has been created to identify the
projects in all Member States of the European Union. Seventy-five innovative projects have
been selected and described. They have been included in the publication 'Innovations for the
Improvement of the Urban Environment: A European Overview' and were presented in a
European Conference on Urban Innovations, organized by the Foundation in Seville, 6-8
October 1993. The conference marked the end of the first phase and nourished the following
analytical phase. Another of the Foundation's projects had an important input into the
conference. The project on 'The Electronic Home: Interactive communications of the
future', including two studies on 'The impact of the immotique and the domotique on urban
functions' helped inform discussion at the conference.
Sadly, a few months after the Seville conference, our general rapporteur, Professor Yannos
Politis, passed away. He had been one of its most enthusiastic participants: the report on the
Seville conference was the last piece he was working on. His general report will be much
missed from the publication devoted to the Seville conference.
The present publication includes additional key papers presented at the conference written
after the conference, together with messages and lessons from the conference.
