Kommunikation-Geschichte anstatt Buch-Geschichte Der zuerst Mornet zu verdankende Versuch, die Ursprünge der französischen Revolution, und darin namentlich die Rolle der Aufklärung, besser zu begrei- fen, liess vor mehr als 25 Jahren zwei hauptsächliche Strömungen der Forschung entstehen, die eine sozial-geschichtlich, die andere philosophie- und ideologie-kritisch, die beide zu diesem Thema keine ganz und gar erschöpfende Analyse zu liefern vermochten. Die generell in Europa erfolgten sozialen Umwälzungen können in der Tat allein das Spezifische der französischen Situation nicht hinreichend beschreiben, während die Analysen der Diskurse gewöhnlich zu sehr aus dem sozialen Kontext herausheben und die den politischen und philosophischen Reden eigene, starke symbolische Wirksamkeit sich allzusehr verselbständigen lassen. In diesem Zwischenbereich zwischen Ideen und gesellschaftlicher Realität sollten in die Forschung die Kommunikationsweisen und insbesondere die spezifischen Wirkungen der Kommunikation durch das Buch miteinbezogen werden, die sich gerade in der prärevolutionären Periode stark entwickelt hatte und nachhaltigere symbolische Auswirkungen als die einfache orale Kommunikation besitzt.
Faulty persons Erving Goffman spent twelve months on the island of Unst, in the Shetland, between December 1949 and May 1951. Out of this first long fieldwork he derived a doctoral dissertation, Communication Conduct in a Island Community, which he submitted in 1953 to the « Faculty of the Division of the Social Sciences » of the University of Chicago. As the except chosen here (Chapter xx, « Faulty Persons ») shows quite well, Goffman appears as an already quite mature scholar. In order to better understand his undertaking, one tried to reconstruct his role and his rapport, on the basis of a short, intensive period of fieldwork in August 1988. As Goffman stressed, «this is a study in a community not of a community». Yet this is not any community. A better understanding of the specifie community he dealt with may lead to a more refined scrutiny of his dissertation and of the entire work which proceeded from it.
La communication en défaut Erving Goffman a séjourné douze mois dans l'île de Unst, dans l'archipel des Shetland, entre décembre 1949 et mai 1951. De ce premier long terrain, il a retiré une thèse de doctorat, Communication Conduct in an Island Community, qu'il a défendue en 1953 au département de sociologie de l'université de Chicago. Comme le montre l'extrait choisi ici (chapitre XX, « Faulty per-ons), c'est un Goffman déjà très mûr qui s'y révèle. Afin de mieux comprendre sa démarche, on a cherché à reconstituer son rapport aux habitants, aux informateurs, au cours d'un séjour dans l'île en août 1988. Son étude est bien, comme il l'a dit lui-même avec insistance, une recherche faite dans une communauté et non sur une communauté. Mais il ne s'agit pas de n'importe quelle communauté et une meilleure connaissance de celle-ci permet une approche plus nuancée de son texte et de l'œuvre qui en découle.
