The influence of Platonism should not be ignored when studying the philosophical fundamentals of French romanticism and symbolism. In the XIXth century, Plato 's work was not known with precision. This period however was strongly influenced by the platonic tradition, which dates back to Plutarch, up to the XVIIIth century theosophists and German romantics. What characterizes this platonic influence ? What can we learn from Platonism on French romanticism ? Was the XIXth century in literature entirely platonic ? This paper gives a tentative answer to these questions.
