Four « Thennidorian » Newspapers
The study relates to four newspapers published in Paris in the automn of 1797, shortly after the Coup d'Etat of the 18th of Fructidor. Albert Mathiez did not know these newspapers. From these four newspapers, two of them, the Impartial Républicain and the Réveil des Départements were published only once or at least only a number one was kept ; the other two ones were published for a longer time ; we have got eleven numbers of the Démocrate (n° 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 15, 17 and 18) and thirteen numbers of the Défenseur de la Constitution (from 1 to 13).
The period covered by the first three newspapers goes from the 10th to the 28th of September 1797 whereas the Défenseur de la Constitution was published from the 8th to the 21th of following October.
These four newspapers are all « fructidoriens » but appear somehow quite different in their political appreciation. If all four are favourable to the Coup d'Etat it is the last one — published later — that seems the most « advanced » one. Of course the personality of their editors, some of them well-known, others less famous if not unknown, is to be considered. The analysis of these papers gives us eventually more information about the post-fructidorian period than about the 18th of Fructidor itself.
