ANALYSIS OF POWER ELECTRONICS
AND ELECTRICAL DRIVES
FULL DAY

About the instructors
Pavol Bauer received his Masters in Electrical Peter van Duijsen has worked with computer
Engineering at the Technical University of Kosice and simulation and power electronics for over 10
Ph.D. from the Delft University of Technology. Since years. After receiving his Masters in Electrical

conferences. His research interest includes power
electronic circuit topologies, soft switching, and
simulation of power electronics, control and dynamic
analysis of power converters.
CONTENT
The aim of the seminar is to teach the participants how to efficiently analyze their designs using state of
the art verification, design and simulation tools. The participant will learn how to choose for an appropriate
tool and how to apply these tools correctly.
THEORY
The purpose of this seminar is to give an overview of the existing tools that are available for power
electronics, electrical machines, actuator/sensor and electrical drive control design and analysis.
Topics in this seminar:
• Basic principles of modelling and simulation.
• Component modeling. Dynamic behavior and losses. Determine system behavior of complete
systems using various simulation packages such as Spice, Simulink and Caspoc. Semiconductor
modeling for fast simulation and loss-calculation are elaborated.
• Calculating losses in the Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS). Focussing on special
semiconductor and inductor models, the losses in a SMPS can be estimated.
• Small-Signal analysis for any general SMPS. Using new Small-Signal identification tools, stability
analysis can be carried out for any type of converter or drive system.
• Electromagnetic behavior of SMPS. Due to a tighter integration of components in a smaller
space, the electromagnetic coupling between various components becomes an issue. Special
tools are discussed which focus on the power electronics designs.
• Debugging Embedded-Control during simulation. An introduction is given in the debugging of
embedded Control while it is coupled to a system simulator.
• Generating Embedded-Control C-code from a simulation model. Directly export a model for a
control structure in C-code, which can be implemented in an Embedded-Control.
• Tips and Tricks for Spice. General issues on spice modeling for power electronics, which

enhances the simulation.

• Semiconductor and Heatsink modeling. Understand new semiconductor and heatsink models and
how to obtain their parameters from the datasheet.
• Coupling between system simulation and electromagnetic field solvers. How to create the
optimum coupling between Finite Element Modeling (FEM) and Boundary Element Modeling
(BEM) field solvers and a system simulator.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLES

The seminar will be conducted in a PC class for hands-on experience. It includes the practical evaluation
of several simulation examples of power electronics and electrical drives using various verification, design
and simulation tools such as Spice, Simulink, Power 456 and CASPOC. All theoretical aspects will be
accompanied by examples

HANDOUTS

Each participant will receive the book "Modeling and Simulation for Power Electronics and Electrical
Drives" by Dr. P. Bauer. Further handouts include the presented materials, tutorials and an Express
version of the simulation package Caspoc.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Engineers managers and researchers working in the field of power electronics and electrical drives.

BENEFITS

You will understand how to apply various verification, design and simulation tools to your power electronic
and electrical drive designs.
(* The seminar will be conducted in a PC class for hands-on experience, English and German speaking
instructors)
